Oddly not very long ago the subject of the picture 'Portrait of a Young Man' cropped up and I discovered that there were quite of a lot of similar portraits attributed to Botticelli even though the picture in the National Gallery is supposed to be the only known face portrait that he painted. All that aside I am usually fascinated when I stand in front of a portrait and try and imagine what the subject was thinking about.Graham Edwardshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11196744947133121475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13883584.post-89462845916421870232019-03-09T14:38:39.402+00:002019-03-09T14:38:39.402+00:00I think we can read many things into this portrait...I think we can read many things into this portrait. And immediately, of course, realized that it was a painting of a man. But there is quite a bit of resemblance. And it's a stunning portrait. And we must realize that five hundred years in the history of humans is not that long.
And I honestly believe that my friend may be a descendent of this man or his family.
Could he have been someone that Botticelli loved? He and the other artists of his time who tried out new ideas, methods and techniques are fascinating!
When I was in Florence in the 1980s, I had the privilege to see some of Botticelli's works for real, for instance the "Birth of Venus".
If you look at his wikipedia entry, you'll find that the portrait of the young man has several brothers and cousins.
