Over at the geograph website, one of my photographs has just won "picture of the week" for Week 48. It was chosen from 2235 eligible images. This is the second time in 2019 that I have won "picture of the week" and I am as pleased as punch.
As you can see, my winning picture is of rock climbers in Derbyshire. They were tackling a tricky climb on Froggatt Edge. The sunlight was co-operative that day as I rambled by without a mobile phone or any emergency gear whatsoever - mad fool that I am.
Very soon I am going into the city centre to walk by The River Don. I want to photograph the point where the subterranean River Sheaf enters the Don by Blonk Street Bridge. This time I will be taking all necessary survival aids - including rope, sleeping bag, tent, a medical kit, snow shoes, a compass, a GPS beacon, food for three days, a gallon of water, a St Bernard dog, a canoe and a mountain rescue team in a Land Rover..
I have told Shirley that if I am not back home by nightfall to send out helicopters and a police search team. After all, walking is a dangerous activity - probably far more dangerous than the pastime illustrated in my winning picture. You can never be too careful can you?

ReplyDeleteThere are no voters. The winning picture is chosen by the previous week's winner so I will be picking the winner for Week 49. You can easily find out who took the pictures but I am sure that all winners are like me and just seek to pick the image they like best.

ReplyDeleteThere is a lake west of here, well four or five hours west of here, called Medicine Lake. It's in Jasper National Park and it is drained by a subterranean river, the Maligne river which is sometimes above ground and sometimes below ground. The native people called it Medicine Lake because it fills and drains quite dramatically throughout the year.
I'm so glad that you took everyone's excellent advice and will now be walking with the proper supplies, although how you will manage to get very far with all that cargo is beyond me. Perhaps a pack horse? Or you could just ride with the mountain rescue team in the Land Rover:)

I think that the safest thing for me to do is to just stay at Home and forget rambling in the countryside. It is clearly too risky. I wonder if I should disconnect our electricity and gas supplies as there is inherent danger in energy.
DeleteMake sure you use a seatbelt whilst sitting in your chair. You're not a young man and it could be dangerous if you should tip out of your chair by accident. Just saying.
DeleteThanks for the advice Lily. On reflection I think I will remain in bed. Coming downstairs is very hazardous. Many people die as a result of falling downstairs.

ReplyDeleteYour scant regard for your wife and children and anyone who might be inconvenienced or even have to risk their lives if anything happened to you is not something to be proud of and certainly not something about which to make sarcastic remarks when those who care try and make you see sense. I've had experience of this. You annoy me. Which surprises me because it must mean that I care.

DeleteCongratulations on your honor. Why many of these rock climbers aren't killed I don't know. On the other hand I could trip on the side walk and be critically injured.
