Balls? I thought that might get your attention for some reason.
Above that's one kind of fungi known as earthballs and below that's another kind of fungi called puffballs. I googled images of them sliced open to see how they might compare with the "thing" I shared with you on Saturday night.
I am still no closer to coming up with an airtight explanation. If I had spare banknotes aplenty I might send the curious item off somewhere for chemical analysis.
I should emphasise how light the item is and when you squeeze its surface it is springy - like a sponge. It has no odour and since I sliced it open its inner whiteness has not changed. Just as a reminder, here's the dissected image that I posted on Saturday:-
Maybe it is some kind of sponge for cosmetics or their removal but no amount of googling revealed anything similar.
Ah well, thanks for all the helpful suggestions but maybe I will never know.
I ended yesterday's blogpost with this odd line that had Meike in Germany puzzled: "Mama done told me there'd be days like this". It referenced a song that played in my head before I pressed the "Publish" button. First recorded in 1994, that song is "Days Like This" by Van Morrison and for your elucidation and entertainment, here it is:-
I love Van Morrison. So unique and talented!
ReplyDeleteJust like you in that regard Debra.
DeleteThis song reminded me of The Shirelles, Mama said there'd be days like this, another fine song.
ReplyDeleteAs for the ball, I can only assume it is some alien artifact, left behind when you were abducted and then subsequently returned to your family. It would explain so much:)
Thanks for sharing that song Pixie. I would hazard a guess that it contained the roots of Van Morrison's composition. In other words - he borrowed and adapted it.
DeleteI've met people who know about every fungus around. There are very few of these fungi experts and they impress me with their knowledge.
ReplyDeleteBut it's like the only know the pinnacle of the iceberg - not what lies beneath the surface.
DeleteThank you for the explanation about the line in your post that puzzled me.
ReplyDeleteThe Thing has become even more mysterious now. You could take it to uni to some specialist department and have it examined. Maybe it's a hitherto unknown fungus and will be named after you.
Oh I would love that. Fame at last... The Pudding Fungus. I would be immortal.
DeleteI've never heard the whole song, but I knew about it. Sometimes I feel I've had too many "days like this" and hope for something better.
ReplyDeleteActually, Van seems to be singing about a good day when everything came together very nicely.
DeleteIt's all a load of balls really!
ReplyDeleteAnd there was me thinking that you were a proper lady.
Delete;)
DeleteLove his music. I used to sing Morrison's Have I Told You Lately to my son when he was a baby. He turns 29 tomorrow, so that was a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fine song to sing to your baby boy. Maybe you should sing it to him again tomorrow - in person or over the phone or on Zoom. Who knows? Maybe he will sing it back to you and mean it.
DeleteI still think it's aliens.
ReplyDeleteIf there a University nearby with a natural sciences or botany department? Maybe they would be able to answer the question. Here in the USA, the local office the Department of Agriculture would likely offer to help, often the staff have degrees in plant sciences and are curious explorers.
ReplyDeleteSome mysteries are never to be solved.
ReplyDeleteThere has to be a way to identify this mystery object.
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing these new photos from you, I'm on team puffball for your found fungus.
ReplyDeleteLike Pixie, I thought the phrase was from this song:

I hope you solve this one, I'm invested now.
ReplyDeleteYou had me at “ balls” Quelle surprise !
ReplyDeleteI wonder if your balls look like that on the inside? Why not check with the aid of a sharp knife?
