Help

Help! Now available in novel form, my story, "The Lost Schoolgirl" has become a runaway success - so much so that the publishers are planning to launch a second edition. Trouble is they are demanding a different cover design for the book. I have only been given two choices - above or below. Which would you pick and why?

⦿

I have exactly the same dilemma in relation to the film version of "The Lost Schoolgirl". You may remember that I sold the rights to a Hollywood-based film production company called Scamalot. They have asked me to pick a cinema poster style that could influence the overall mood of the film (American: movie). Which would you pick and why? Above or below?

P.S. These A.I. images were in truth made rapidly using Microsoft Bing Image Creator

  1. I tend to go for the spooky ones!

    1. Is that why you enjoy looking in mirrors?

  2. Lost with a cake and a carved pumpkin nearby? I don't think so. The second book cover is my choice, which hopefully conveys the sadness of the story. For the film, the first one indicates happiness, especially by the extended cast. Perhaps they want her to get lost. The second poster might bring out the ghoulishness of those who see the film, who may go on to be torturers and murderers.

  3. For the novel I'd choose the darker image, the other looks too much like a children's book. For the movie, I don't like either one. The first suggests a childrens movie, the second a horror movie and The Lost Schoolgirl isn't that.

  4. I can only groan at what Bing Image Creator has come up with - nothing really fits! The original book cover was perfect.
Of the two book covers here, the first one has nothing at all to do with the story (where does the cake come in?). The second one is a tad better suited, but plain ugly.
Both film posters are completely misleading.
The mirror - certainly a central element to the story - is missing entirely from all of these.
Clearly, the data base behind Bing Image Creator has been fed with an unproportionally high amount of Manga.

    1. The cake might be AI's idea of what a Yorkshire pudding looks like! I guess my instruction to Image Creator could have been more detailed and clearer.

  5. Oh, definitely the second option of each. More appropriate for your audience.

  6. For the book I'd pick the dark one because I just prefer it. It may need editing though because Yorkshire is spelt with two Ks.
For the movie poster I like the vintage styled poster also just because it appeals to me the most of the two.
I could have said something analytical or talked about conveying meaning or whatever but nah, i'm just picking on preference

  7. It's a toss up between Victoria, Gothic and Manga that AI has chosen for you. The death of oil paints, pencils and general mind/hand creativity is happening before our eyes ;)

  8. The second one would be my choice. It does what it says on the tin or even cover. It's frightening.

  9. Not wishing to offend, but I think they are all terrible and bear little resemblance to the storyline. The last one is enough to give the reader nightmares - after all, it isn't written by Stephen King!

    1. It might all be about simply giving the AI facility a more detailed prompt.

  11. I guess the horror ones are more in tune with the story, though I guess that would put me off reading the book/watching the film. The more innocent versions would suggest a children's version which could cause confusion and horrendous upset when someone's little darling starts to read/push the start button on the DVD.

  12. I would try to work the mirror, and the apparitions into the image.

  13. I'm sure there are plenty of real artists who could provide better images than these. There's more than an element of madness in both the film versions.

  14. Nope, neither one works for me, Neil. Do you have lots of extra time on your hands to play with these programs? Get out and about and take more fabulous photos for us. ;)

  15. I would choose the one that can spell your name.

  16. Dear God. They're all terrifying. (Well, maybe not the top one.)

I like how AI gave you a second K on the scary book cover. The spelling is all a bit peculiar. Vaguely Russian. Hmmm...
