August 1st is Yorkshire Day!
In celebration, I invite you to watch this
three minute video:-
It is little wonder that we think of
Yorkshire as "God's own county"...
The Yorkshire Flag |
"O God, I could be bounded in a nut shell and count myself a king of infinite space, were it not that I have bad dreams." - Hamlet Act II scene ii

I need to visit Yorkshire. That video was spectacular , indeed I understand your sentiment of it being "God's own country". Yorkshire is magnificent. Thanks Yorkie.
ReplyDeleteIt only costs a handful of dollars to fly here from Oz! Don't bother with London - it's full of Londoners!
DeleteThat's a typical Aussie thing re nicknames. Peoples names are shortened and then a y is put on the end .
ReplyDeleteThanks for that tidbit of information Leishy!
DeleteI do get called Leishy which I quite like thanks Yorkie .
DeleteHappy Yorkshire Day! My wife is from Yorkshire and I asked her if she knew about this this day. She doesn't!
ReplyDeleteWell she does now! Red. In celebration please make her a roast beef dinner with golden Yorkshire puddings.
DeleteBeautiful countryside!
ReplyDeleteThat's a very pretty flag...and stunning cliffs. Vera Lynn should've sung about those!!!
"The White Cliffs of Dover" sung by Vera Lynn was played at my mother's funeral. I know you didn't intend this but you have made me cry Lee. I can hardly see the laptop's screen through this blur of tears.
DeleteSorry, Yorky...that was unintentionally insensitive of me. I apologise.
DeleteGotcha Lee! I was kidding!
DeleteYou're a rat! I'll get you back...just you wait and see! I'm a Scorpio...and Scorpios never forget...and don't your forget that, laddie!!! :)
DeleteYou had me feeling really bad every time I thought about it yesterday afternoon. You'll get your just desserts...and it won't be apple crumble or Lee's Internationally Famous Bread & Butter Pudding, either!!!! :)
Excellent video. I wish I could produce something like that. I wonder when they will get the scaffolding down from York Minster it has been there since the middle ages.
ReplyDeleteTo make a video like that you will need a helicopter Adrian. Islamic State have a few to spare but you will need to fly to northern Iraq to barter for one. While you are there please tell those lads to get a proper job! Maybe they could become scaffolders and rebuild Palmyra.
DeleteI suspect a microlight would do. Helicopters are too expensive and they vibrate a lot.
DeletePS. What has IS got to do with the West Window of York Minster. Ten pounds to enter one would think that the C of E would spend that on propping it up properly. If for nothing else than for the glorification of god. Happen better if it collapses. The old masons rarely got it wrong but in this case they did fail to identify a bit of soggy ground. No define intervention here.
DeleteDefine intervention? Don't you mean divine intervention you daft bugger Adrian!
DeleteHappy Yorkshire Day, Neil!
ReplyDeleteI've seen this video before; Anna Lupton who runs a B&B in Ampleforth has posted it on her blog some time in the spring, when my sister and I were planning our annual Yorkshire holiday.
To answer the question the video asks at the end, "When are you coming?": On August 16th!
I hope the weather is good for you then Ambassador. And happy Yorkshire Day to you lass! All together now -
Delete"Where hast tha bin since I saw thee?
On Ilkley Moor bah tat..."
Lovely! I am quite overwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteBut even before seeing it, I have wanted to come to Yorkshire for 35 years, ever since someone said I was the best thing he had seen since the York Minster.
I have to see my rival, you see.
Although that was a long time ago. Now if he encountered me, he might say, "you are the best thing I've seen since the small, moldy, tumble-down church just outside Feathers Bottom."
As an aside, it now costs £10 to enter York Minster. Of course living in Sheffield we are at the southern edge of Yorkshire - not in its heart. We are little more than a mile from the Derbyshire border where I am a volunteer border guard. I have my own camouflage gear and a machine gun called Tommy.
DeleteMost definitely some of the most beautiful land and vistas in England. Magnificent !
ReplyDeleteHappy Yorkshire Day Pud !
~Jo
We are lucky to live here. After The Garden of Eden, God made Yorkshire. Thank you God!
DeleteThat was a wonderful video. I would like to see all those places and buildings and "your" sea and walk those trails with you and Mrs. Pudding. Believe it or not, it is Colorado Day today. As a state, Colorado is 134 years old but of course, the land and the First People were here centuries before that.
ReplyDeleteThat is spooky! You are right MT, August 1st is also Colorado Day! Glad you enjoyed the video clip. If you come over I will wrestle with Big Bear.
DeleteMagnificent video! Adrian does not need a helicopter, just a small drone.
ReplyDeleteHang on, to some people Adrian is a small drone - but not to me. No siree!
DeleteCertainly one of my favourite parts of my beloved England especially the Dales but then there is still quite a bit of Yorkshire that we have not explored. It's on my list to return but there is so much to see in Europe and it is a costly expedition from Oz. pity we colonials are no longer welcome for longer than six months, staying for a year would be a wonderful experience ( if the finances could stretch ). BTW the Minster was completely bare inside when we visited. Not a stick of furniture . Must have been something planned for the huge space I guess.
ReplyDeleteHelen- maybe you should have visited Beverley Minster instead of York. Having attended Beverley Grammar School that is "The Minster" I know best. And I totally share your annoyance about Aussie visits to Britain. Most of us want you far more than Eastern Europeans with whom we have no shared heritage.
DeleteGrand video, though I didn't see many shots of Barnsley - I suppose there's a special film just focussing on Barnsley?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, plenty of nice green fields and whatnot, but a bit more of Yorkshire (or South Yorks at least)'s industrial heritage would have shown it to be more like the Yorkshire I know and love.
Are you totally sure that Barnsley is in Yorkshire? I thought it was a Lancashire mill town.
DeleteAre you really that ashamed of Barnsley? I have friends who came from Barnsley. Came from I suppose being the pertinent point.
DeleteThe film was superb as was the music as is the geography of Yorkshire. It's a shame that there wasn't a Yorkshire composer and they had to use a Norwegian one.
ReplyDeleteNorway and Denmark are where the ancients of Yorkshire came from Graham. We have so many place names of Scandinavian origin. It seemed appropriate to allow a little known Norwegian some welcome exposure.
