London

As I wish to avoid a beating from the blogosphere's headmistress - Madam Lee of Tamborine Mountain - I just need to say that I will probably be "off air" for the next three or four days. Later this morning I will be picking up a hire van then driving down to Birmingham with the wife riding shotgun. We will stay in England's second city overnight to help our darling daughter to clean and vacate her flat before moving down to England's only jungle on Friday afternoon.

The jungle is called London - a vast and somewhat higgledy piggledy urban sprawl where everybody else knows where they are going as I no doubt suffer stressful palpitations just trying to edge into the correct lane. I have never been to Camberwell Green before. I am nervous in case I have to stop to ask native Londoners for directions. It is well known that they are quite aggressive and most unlike we friendly, helpful Yorkshire folk.

It is easy to get lost forever in jungles so this might be my last post...

  1. I'm glad you've taken heed, Yorkie! Write your note first...not after your return...when you've been missing in action for a few days without warning! Hahahahaha!

Have a safe trip and don't take a wrong turn that will lead you through a tunnel forcing you to end up in France!!!!! Then I'll really have to send out the search party!

    1. France? Thanks for the warning Lee! But I could have made several thousand pounds by loading young migrant men with rucksacks into the back of my white van. I missed a trick there.

  2. Well I hope you have steady nerves driving . Good luck and hope the move goes well. Sounds a wee bit stressful to me but something that parents do to help their kids.

    1. I survived to tell the tale even though the van I was given by Hertz was considerably bigger than the one I paid for!

  3. What an awful place to move to. You would be doing her a big favour if you took the M6 north and not south.

    1. I know what you mean Adrian. She might have fun there and she might make good money but it is not a place that I would want to live. Sheffield is like a village in comparison.

  4. Rather you than me...! As for directions, I am sure you'll find your way round, what with Shirley as your navigator, plus the possible help from a satnav or a handy print-out from google maps. Make sure you all stop to take a break in between cleaning and driving and shifting heavy stuff before everyone gets annoyed and snaps at the others.

    1. There was no snapping until we reached Camberwell Green to find the road round the green blocked by workmen. Shirley spent five minutes talking to a doctor from the health centre about an alternative route and then when she got back in the van and we were off she told me the doctor didn't know exactly which left to take. This was brilliant in thick traffic with horns hooting and buses and motorbikes flying past. I might have said a rude word or two!

  5. Shirley riding shotgun; you will be quite safe and Frances will be forever grateful to both of you.

    1. It was nice to help her settle in. She has so much stuff! The flat she left in Birmingham was much bigger, more luxurious, warmer and cheaper but she was a bit lonesome there I guess.
