OCD?

It used to be that I didn't give a monkey's about mugs I drank from. As long as the vessel was clean and big enough then it was okay - no problem. However, over the years, I have become more and more particular about the mugs I drink from. Of course I could drink from any mugs but I feel much happier and more comfortable drinking from what have become my preferred mugs.

To illustrate my mug obsession, I just went in our kitchen to snap the following four photographs.

This is the big mug that I drink from at the start of the day. A big mug of hot tea. A small mug just won't do. I need a pint of tea each morning:-
During the day, I often decide to have a mug of coffee and this is my coffee mug. Originally, it belonged to our daughter. It came from Birmingham Southern College in Alabama. It used to have the symbol of her sorority - Alpha Omicron Pi printed on it but that was gradually washed off in our dishwasher many months ago.I
Before bedtime I will occasionally make myself a mug of hot chocolate and this is my preferred hot chocolate mug:-
During the day, if I am at home, I will have several more mugs of tea but I never want to use the "big mug" that I favour in the morning. No, during the rest of the day I like to drink my tea from one of my Hull City mugs - four of which are pictured below:-
If I don't have my drinks from the vessels pictured above I feel a little restless or glum. Other mugs just aren't right.

So have I got Obsessive Compulsive Disorder? I undertook an online survey to determine my OCD level but there were no questions about mugs. Instead they asked questions like this one:-
Obviously, my response was negative even though I have deliberately poisoned dozens of dinner guests and the overall survey conclusion was that I was "highly unlikely" to be an OCD sufferer but I am still concerned about my mug mania. How about you? Have you got any quirky obsessions?

  1. I know someone who gets obsessed about what to wear to suit the weather. There is a check of forecast temp, wind and humidity and the outfit is planned accordingly with some consternation if the conditions are unpredictable. An obsession in one area isn't ocd though, ocd starts to impair real, every day function.
I could never be even suspected of ocd. I'm the least organised, structured and routined person, I thinkit drives people batty

  2. I use the same mug everyday. It is the only one that has a comfortable handle and doesn't leave drips on the side of the cup. I wish it a long life!

    1. Phew! That's a relief. I am not the only mug maniac around. Please give my regards to your special mug Jan. I hope you will be very happy together for years to come.

  3. I actually suffer from OCD...the real kind. Let me assure you, it's not cute or quirky or fun. It's traumatic and life altering. I'm lucky that I've been symptom free for years now thanks to medication. As for mugs, my favorite is a big red one leftover from my Pier 1 days. :)

    1. I hope I haven't offended you Jennifer. May I assure you that it was not my intention to poke fun at OCD sufferers. It's just that in my own behaviour I have noticed some changes.

    2. Oh, I'm certainly not offended! I didn't mean to imply that. People often describe behavior like yours as OCD, when it's actually more like Compulsive Personality Disorder, which is a different thing. Not that I think you have that, either.

    3. Perhaps I should have done some more research.

  4. I'm not obsessive, I will drink coffee out of anything but for tea it must be a fine china mug. I don't worry about poisoning dinner guests but I do worry about serving Rick's dog food at the right temperature.

    1. I guess that if it is at the wrong temperature Rick will go berserk - a bit like Henry VIII when banquet food was not to his liking. He would also bark like crazy.

  5. I have a very large & thick mug for my morning tea - nothing else will do. But then during the day I switch to a smaller, turquoise and white striped china mug - and only that one will do. I have 3 other complete sets of various size and colour but they only get used when company comes bye! I guess we all have our quirks! :-)

    1. When it comes to drinking vessels, you are rather like me Margie. Thanks for calling by.

  6. I have a large mug of a similar size to yours, with a similar logo and that is the only mug I ever use but then I only have one hot drink a day, the breakfast one. When I met my partner five years ago, I bought a similar one and took that down to her house and only use that when I'm staying there.
And one last thing, I only have leaf tea, made in a pot and only ever one brand of tea - Yorkshire tea, the best.

    1. You have good taste Derek. The tea plantations of sunny Yorkshire produce some of the best tea in the world

  7. thanks so much for your concern over Tom and Princess. Pleased to say that the cat is fine but Tom is battling with Fibrosis only just diagnosed. This is probably due to working in the building industry as an Electician for many years and coming in contact with asbestos. We are needless to say all very upset here but will have to come to terms with it. I will get back to blogging but at the present time have other things on my mind. Once again thankyou for your concern. x

  9. I don't care if you're a bit OCD. You just don't drink tea out of mugs. You use a tea cup!!!

    1. Sorry Red. Teacups do not hold enough tea.

    2. But teacups are so English!

  10. I find myself getting more entrenched in habit as I get older. My husband is, too. Maybe it's an age thing. Or maybe it's just that we know what we like and we don't want to waste time on stuff we don't like!

  11. I'm with Red. It just doesn't feel right to me to drink tea out of anything but a cup, a delicate cup, resting gently on its saucer. And if I want more, why, I simply pour a second cup from the pot! Goodness, you Poms seem to have completely lost the plot!

    1. We have evolved our tea drinking habits leaving former colonials behind with out-of-date tea rituals.

  12. I'm with YP, as nice as it is to drink out of a proper china cup, they don't hold anywhere near enough tea and having a second cup of less than hot, stewed, tea from the pot just isn't the same.

    1. Some of the colonials appear to think that drinking tea is a ritualistic parlour game whereas for big butch English fellows like you and I it's how we quench thirst.

  13. I realised a while ago that I always put my left shoe on before my right one.....and left off before right too. I wonder if everyone else is the same? I have a lot of different mugs, and have my favourites but it is usually just the first one to hand that I use. ( but not if it is a " man's mug"..ie the one with a cricket scene on it)

  14. I have lots of drinking mugs, but only ever use two for my own personal use. Two favourites....the others are there just gathering dust or to be used infrequently when infrequent guests visit.

I also have a permanent mug....the one that looks back at me when I look in a mirror!

  15. LOL -- I have "mug mania" too, in some ways. I definitely have a few favorites and I'm never as happy (like now, when I'm in a hotel) when I can't use my customary coffee mugs. Fortunately I don't worry about pushing people in front of a bus either.

  16. I'm more likely to harm myself whilst bending over backwards to be sure that everyone is happy and comfortable, lol, so no worries there. My coffee mug (or peppermint 'tea', if I must) is always drunk from a Hall 1318 coffee mug - solid, large easy handle, keeps the beverage warm. I have noticed that I tend to buy exactly two of everything at the grocery store....

    1. You buy two of everything? Subconsciously you are probably influenced by the tale of Noah and his Ark.

  17. Nah, the mugs are just a matter of personal taste. When I worked in psychology we were told a little OCD wasn't so bad and could make you organised. I don't have any habits now but when I was a child living in a vast and isolated farmhouse I always had to look behind my parents open bedroom door before I went to bed to make sure there was no one hiding there, though what I planned to do if there was a bogey man I've no idea. As I say, I'm OK now.
