Turnip

David Burnip - aka The Wandering Turnip

Well, I knew nothing of The Wandering Turnip until I encountered him on Thelma's "North Stoke" blog that currently comes to us from Todmorden, West Yorkshire. This also happens to be The Wandering Turnip's home town.

The Wandering Turnip - whose real name is David Burnip - likes to visit rather obscure places with his selfie stick and drone, creating YouTube videos of his travels. He also brings to those videos his innate curiosity  and his enthusiasm for simply being alive. Sometimes he meets local people and sometimes he recites poetry. There is a charming and engaging innocence about David's delivery.

As a wanderer myself, I also sometimes feel like a turnip so I find it easy to relate to David Burnip. He could easily be a younger version of myself. Please see below two YouTube videos that exemplify his explorations...

Lincoln:-

New Quay, Wales:-

In David's wake, I may become The Rambling Parsnip. Visit The Wandering Turnip's YouTube site here.

  2. I love his enthusiasm, especially with his obsession about the great tall chimneys, which are the remnants from the past of the mills. Think he went up to London to be an actor but failed so came home again. He will turn into a Fred Dibnah when he gets old.

    1. Yes. He even sought out a big chimney in Lincoln.

  4. You've got more to worry about than turnips and parsnips. You have absolutely spotless chlorinated chicken and beef full of tasty hormones and antibiotics to look forward to. From the clip, which I will give proper attention to due course, the man who lives in the most isolated town likes people. Better that he lives in London.

    1. American meat? It's enough to make people go vegan.

  5. I like how he gets so excited about everything he sees. Good for tourism I would think.

    1. Some of the places he goes have hardly seen any tourism at all.

  6. In Saskatchewan, Canada, they have a "Saskatchewanderer" who promotes tourism by focusing on typical and unusual provincial locations. It's a great idea, imo.

    1. Saskatchewan? That is where our friend Red ("Hiawatha House") was born and raised in a very small place called Esk. Maybe "Saskatchewanderer" should go there.

  7. Maybe you should become a vlogger? Apparently there can be a lot of money in it, unlike this completely futile pursuit known as blogging. :)

I'm glad he showed us on the map where New Quay is. I'd never heard of it and of course that was my first question. I like the idea of living in an isolated area but I can see how it would have its drawbacks, particularly for a young person.

    1. Unlike you I am not competent with filming and the processing that follows so I doubt I would be much of a vlogger Steve.

  8. I love that young man's voice, and his excitement for new discoveries, but I don't see how New Quay can be described as isolated. It is very beautiful though.

    1. In British terms it is isolated but in Canadian terms it would seem pretty nearby.

  11. I've visited New Quay every year for the last 20 years (usually multiple times a year), we make the trek across from South Yorkshire. It's a beautiful journey through Eryri National Park, Bala and the stunning sights that Wales has to offer. If you're asking if I could live out there then yes, in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I'd need to work and that would be the challenge to find a job out there with decent pay all year round.

BTW it's not C-E-I Carpets, Cei is welsh for Quay. 😜

I'll be down there next month, can't wait!
