You may recall that it was my job to judge the Week 44 shortlist over at the Geograph site and come up an overall winner. I considered each image carefully and asked Frances and Stew for their thoughts too.
This was the picture that achieved the proverbial bronze medal and was therefore in third place:
It's St Eadburgha's Church in Broadway, Worcestershire.
In second place came this stunning backlit shot of dying fern taken by my friend Walter in Tibby Tamson's Plantation in the Scottish Borders near Peebles:

Lovely photos and the last is the best in my opinion too. What an honour. I do hope you don't become drunk with power:)
ReplyDeleteHey, I am no Donald Trump!
DeleteWell done. You had some excellent photographs to judge.
ReplyDeleteThere were fifty of them in the first place.
DeleteGood choices, all three. I agree, the elongated framing suits the picture perfectly.
ReplyDeleteMs Wills (the winner) often submits elongated pictures.
Delete!. A worthy winner.
ReplyDelete2. Advice for viewers, expand the photo. Really good.
3. Well composed.
Agreed.
DeleteNo. 2... advice taken and appreciated!
DeleteThe Embleton beach is especially interesting because the castle (Dunstanburgh) is more usually photographed from he south. Home turf (and surf) to me - though along time past now.
ReplyDeleteJust as Frances commented below.
DeleteI wouldn't have recognised Dunstanburgh as we always approached it from Craster. ( We lived in Morpeth for 4 years in the 70s) It is a lovely walk along the coast path if you are ever up there!
ReplyDeleteI have been there Frances. Never knew you lived in Morpeth. Southerners and Midlanders are not usually allowed to live in the far north.
DeleteThere is a lot you don't know about me Mr Pud!!
DeleteI know you were a can-can dancer at The Moulin Rouge.
DeleteThe winning photo made me shiver.
ReplyDeleteYou should have put your thermals on dear.
DeleteEach is a perfection in its own right and it must be very difficult to judge against each other photos from such a wide range of subject material.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tigger. I was drawn to the winner immediately.
DeleteI love them all. Deciding which would be the overall winner was undoubtedly a difficult decision. Your choice was a good one. Imagine the hundred and hundreds of years that the castle has stood there as the waves crashed into the beach, and now as the castle falls to ruin, the waves crash on.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had your poet's hat on when you wrote this Debby! What the hell were you doing up at 5.40 in the morning?
DeleteMy alarm goes off at 4:50. I'm a working gal, YP.
DeleteThe castle and tide photo is visually stunning.
ReplyDeleteThe girl done good Dave.
DeleteI know it's all subjective and I didn't see the 47 other contenders, but I think these are outstanding. I was glad I took Andrew's advice and enlarged them. On the topic of subjectivity, I'm reading an interesting book called Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment. Of course I'm in no way saying your judgement here is flawed. The topic is just on my brain at the moment. (along with Marvin Gaye singing)
ReplyDeleteWhat does Daniel Kahneman mean by "Noise"?
DeleteDid you read the premise for the book? I'm not sure I can define it in a word, but I see it as the factors that cause people to make wildly disparate decisions when given the same set of circumstances.
DeleteI get that Kelly but I don't understand "Noise".
DeleteHmm... well perhaps in a word they mean "distractions". When decisions are made by algorithms, particularly by computer, there is no noise. So I think the word distraction would be a good substitution there.
DeleteThe winning picture is cleverly done. You've also had me googling Tibbie Tamson.
ReplyDeleteDid you find it? I wonder who Tibby Tamson was>
DeleteYes.
DeleteI tend to love landscapes and water--the endless and powerful waves make a stunning image.
ReplyDeleteI think the way that the wave to the right is bursting on the shore really makes this picture.
DeleteAn excellent choice and a very worthy winner, YP. I'm sure I've seen the winning photo somewhere else - possibly on the BBC website, which regularly shows a selection of "Britain at it's best" photos.
ReplyDeleteYou may have seen a similar one Carol but this beach photo was taken on Monday November 1st - just fifteen days ago.
