Album

Plenty of hours. That's how long I have spent working on Frances and Stew's wedding album and it's still not done. There are currently fifty five A4 pages and I hope that that will be enough.

It's the sort of thing I enjoy doing and besides it is a genuine labour of love. As I said to our princess over the phone last evening - I am trying to make something that they will cherish - something to treasure. A lovely album in memory of a joyful weekend in last August Bank Holiday's sunshine. That has been my aim throughout.

The work has involved gathering the pictures - not all by the professional photographer who was in attendance at the wedding  but also from the mobile phones and cameras of wedding guests. Once gathered I have then put chosen images in the virtual "in tray" while rejecting many others. Then there's improving some of the pictures through editing and there's cropping, masking, framing etcetera - taking advantage of the online tools provided by Cewe Photoworld.

That's the maker I chose though there are of course many other reliable photobook providers online. If you have never made a photobook before, I urge you to give it a go. Of course all your photos must be digital.
How many folders of unseen digital pictures are stored in people's computers around the world? Billions of them. Most will surely disappear when the computers that contain them eventually suffer fatal malfunctions. It's immensely satisfying to bring selected  pictures together into a physical book form. You may also add text if you wish.

The reproduction quality offered  by most photobook manufacturers is outstanding. Soon I will be clicking "Buy" on my computer and in a week or so the precious album will be with us. What arrives will not be a huge surprise to Frances and Stew because I have already asked them to check the online version over and a few changes and additions were then enacted.

Even though I can be stingier than Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol", I will be opting for the top paper quality and a special presentation box too. A photo album like this is not cheap to buy but hey when you only had one daughter to give away - what the hell!

    1. Yeah, give it a go. For example you have some great pictures from your recent holiday and some lovely ones of The Little Guy but the contents could be random. You don't have to have a theme.

  3. Beautiful, all of it - bride, groom, dress, setting, photograph.
I have been making such albums as gifts for friends and family for at least 10 years now. Cewe is a household name in Germany - their commercials have been on TV shortly before the main news almost every night.
One of the first albums I made was in memoriam of Steve, for his Mum. I have made several from Yorkshire holidays and other events. And of course the task is similar to what I do on a smaller scale for my annual Yorkshire Calendar, a Christmas present my sister can look forward to every year.
Of the views from my kitchen window, I have made a calendar and given it to the elderly lady who owns the beautiful garden that I see from there. She was so pleased she told all her visitors and neighbours about it, and keeps turning the pictures over every month in spite of the calendarium being outdated by several years now.
I am sure your album will be brilliant and much cherished. Great work!

    1. I have made just two photobooks before - one of The Peak District and the other of "Foreign Parts" - other countries I have visited in recent years. When "The Wedding Album" is done and dusted I think I will make another photobook in celebration of my walking photos from the last two or three years. You could do one like that for Herr O.K..

    1. The album has grown bigger than I intended but adding four more pages isn't too much extra. I just have this one shot at it Carol. Thanks for calling by again. By the way, each page is double sided.

  7. That's a lovely idea. They will look back in years to come and be very grateful.

I have turned my New Zealand Blog into books for my dotage.

The photos I took of The Family and our expeditions over the years I was in New Zealand are being turned into books - one for each 6 month period I was there. It's a family present I can give at Christmas that means something and can be shared by everyone.

  8. I'm sure it will be amazing when it's done. You're right -- for special photos it makes sense to get them printed, rather than having them all stored in digital form.

I used to make books every year or so of my favorite pictures from that year. I have about six of them. But I eventually stopped. I keep the digital pics in several different places so hopefully I'm protected against a computer crash! (Unless it's the apocalypse, and then I probably won't care.)

    1. I should treat myself to a portable hard-drive so that my photos are all backed up. I bet your six photobook albums are brilliant to behold.

  11. Your book will definitely be treasured. I love the last photo of the bridal couple out in the landscape. I've made a number of photo books to record special places and holidays and also family stories and an alphabet book for my grandson. Not as ambitious as yours, mine are simple soft books, easy to construct and because they are personal they seem to give a lot of pleasure.

  12. A labour of love indeed. I have done two photo books in the past. One for my mother's 90th of her life and one when my daughter graduated of her university days. I know you well the time it takes to edit and put together. I have no fear of losing digital photos. I get them printed and mount them in scrapbooks. I have scrap books going back 50 years documenting all our holidays and important occasions.

  16. I can not agree with you more that this is a fabulous thing to do especially for something as special as a wedding! I think I told you I did one for my son when he graduated with his doctorate and it, like yours, was a large one. I included his musical related photos and achievements from grade school through college with many photos and even scans of awards, musical programs and such. I enjoyed making it and hope to someday make some family history books to be passed down.

From the photos I see here I can tell this will be a very special book that will be cherished and passed down. Is that a picture of you giving the father of the bride speech in the second photo? I know Frances and Stew will love this. Well done Daddy Pudding!
