Idle

Keeper's Cottage at Gringley Lock

I have a bout of blogstipation this morning. Just can't come up with anything to blog about. Either that or I am feeling too idle to bother germinating the seeds of any current ideas. Ah well, that's how it goes during a worldwide health pandemic I guess.

Consequently, I shall grasp the lazy option by sharing another batch of the photographs I took on Thursday when walking in north Nottinghamshire south of the appropriately named River Idle.

Ripened maize - still not harvested

St Peter & St Paul Church, Gringley-on-the-Hill

Park Farm amidst the maize north of Gringley

The River Idle near Misson - once it was an important inland waterway

  1. The first English cottage I ever visited was a "Keeper's Cottage", in Cumbria, in the middle of nowhere. First married home to my then future sister-in-law/friend and her husband. I may have mentioned him to you before. Silent type, totally reliable, complete with dog and ferret, love of a pint, Hunter by inclination and by surname. Which why most befitting that they later moved to Hunter's Cottage, a stone throw down the lane.

As always, your photos capture the mood, the essence so well. Locks? I am conflicted about locks. I have watched many in action; for reasons I have never reflected upon I find them, instinctively, vaguely creepy.

"Blogstipation"? Nah. Crank up the philosopher in you (unless PP has suffocated your will to breathe another word) and give Hamel(d) something to get his teeth in - or at least his library out.

    Keep walking,
    U

    1. I kid you not that I know a fellow called Mike Hunter. He lives in Hunter House on Hunter House Road at Hunter's Bar. Shame our city is not called Huntersville like the town in North Carolina!

Maybe there's a guy round the corner from me called Neil Yorky who lives in Yorkhill Street and used to be a teacher and drives a car called Clint and likes his beer and rants a bit in his cups?

    3. There was an American fantasy novelist called Ursula Le Guin. I wonder if they are the same woman.

  2. Great photos YP. I could easily live in the "Keeper's Cottage and spend my days walking and fishing on the canal towpath.

  3. After your rant yesterday (to which I added but, unfortunately, after your blog comment period had passed) you are allowed to have a wee rest and calm us all down with some beautiful photos. Some of them could well have featured in a 'Patience Strong' book.

    1. Yorky rants for Yorkshire, Graham.
Not to mention Nottinghamshire and occasionally Lincolnshire.

    2. John, Yorky, as you call him, rants, I grant you but can one rant for something? I always imagine a rant which is, by definition, angry is a against things rather than for them. I've not heard of 'airt' which I assume is a Scots term. Aird in Gaelic is a compass point so I am assuming that airt is the Scots equivalent. So I conclude that you're saying that YP is a man of different places. I'm sure you will correct me if I err. I'm not quite sure where this takes me so I'll stop here.

    3. The estabishment gave the original Ranters their name.
And the name stuck. I think the Ranters were antinomian so they believed they could get a bit drink and do a bit of fornicating without losing their salvation. But their speech acts would have been lucid and articulate.

A lad of airts was a phrase used about Burns and RL Stevenson.
Yorky gets about a bit and makes me envious when I consider my feeble walks, which often begin in a bookshop, new or secondhand, and end at Waitrose.

    4. Antinomian. Antinomianism. Against the Mosaic Law, the Law of Moses, the Ten Commandments.
William Blake, heterodox genius, was antinomian, libertarian, and gnostic.

Before the shops closed I purchased a used copy of a Blake biography (2015) by Tobias Churton, Britain's leading scholar of esotericism.

I am neither gnostic nor esoteric, but I was influenced by Francis Schaeffer, the evangelical preacher, who said we should understand the belief systems of the Counter Culture and then debate with their adherents.

  4. In regard to your reply to Ursula's comment- I think the town you are referring to in Alabama is Huntsville.
Keeper's "Cottage"? Doesn't fit my definition of a cottage but I suppose that like so many things, despite having a language in common there are a lot of words that do not translate exactly.
What beautiful landscapes you are surrounded by!

    1. There is definitely a Huntersville in North Carolina near the city of Charlotte. In Alabama there is both a Huntsville (without the ‘er’) and a Guntersville (with a G and an ‘er’).

    2. Ah! And I've never heard of Huntersville until now.

  7. I usually find that if I'm not sure what to blog about, I just start writing, and something usually comes. I'm always interested in hearing about people's daily lives -- what they do to pass the time. Photos are always good too!

I love the little church. Very quaint. I'm surprised there's still corn in the fields. When are they going to harvest it?! Or is it just being left to rot?

    1. I almost stole some corn cobs but thought better of it. The cobs were very ripe and there were several acres of corn. I imagine the farmer knows what he (or she?) is doing.

  12. As far as I am concerned, you can hardly share too many of your pictures, as your walks take you to such beautiful places and you have a great eye for what makes a good photo.
There is a lock-keeper's cottage in Ripon that I like very much. I wonder when I will be able to walk there again.

  15. Beautiful photos QP, you live in a lovely part of the country. Our countryside is great but so hilly and now we are unable to do the hills.
You struck a chord with me, not being able to think of blog content. I am in the doldrums with that as well, haven't blogged for such a long time.
Maybe I'll get some oomph when this so called pandemic comes to an end.
