Kafkaesque

1883-1924

As we approach Christmas, our government's revised COVID-19 guidelines have developed dizzying levels of maze-like complexity. It's like we are all characters in a nightmarish novel by Franz Kafka - running along corridors, pushing open doors, scaling staircases, turning hither and thither. You don't know where you are.

To begin with you effectively have five governments that in most respects have not often worked together throughout the pandemic. There's the overall governance of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to contend with, then there are the devolved governments of Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland and finally there's the government of England which usually melds with the first.

On Wednesday, England finishes what has more or less been a four week lockdown - though schools and the majority of workplaces have been open this time round. Next we will be entering a newly edited tiering regime. Sheffield will be in the harshest tier - Tier 3 even though our infection rate has been dropping significantly. Rural Lincolnshire will also be in Tier 3 because of high infection rates in towns like Grimsby and Scunthorpe even though huge swathes of what is England's second largest county have very low infection rates. Much lower than London which is in Tier 2.

Last week our isolating prime minister attempted to explain the new guidelines via video link having put himself in a compromising position through foolishly hosting a breakfast meeting with selected members of parliament. One of them had coronavirus symptoms. They were photographed without masks on.

By the way, when I refer to official guidelines I should point out that they are in fact a mixture of laws, rules and advice. Sometimes it is impossible to differentiate. Expert commentators and politicians keep appearing on TV offering clarifications that only add to the complexities of the tangled web.

And in the middle of the dire warnings of pandemic wipeout with associated pub and restaurant closures what does the Johnson government do? They announce that the figurative tourniquet of guidelines will be relaxed for five days over Christmas! Up to three households may come together and people can travel freely between the tiered zones. We all know that this relaxation will lead to a big rise in infection rates in January with plenty of extra deaths. What the?

My daughter Frances is especially anxious to avoid coronavirus because her baby is due in the first week of January. You can imagine how different the birthing arrangements in hospital must be for women with coronavirus symptoms. Her husband Stewart would not even be allowed in the delivery room. Interestingly, government guidelines do not  refer to  expectant mothers and the  vital importance of shielding.

None of it is straightforward. Kafka wrote "The Castle" in 1922. If he were still alive today, he might be scribbling away at a new novel loosely based on this disunited country's official handling of COVID-19. Possible titles might be "The Virus" or "Piss Up in a Brewery".

  1. I understand your daughter's concern. I hope things are better by the time she gives birth and her husband is allowed in with her. It is such an important time for them both. We dread that one of us will have to go into Hospital and not be able to visit.

  4. First week of January? Make that somewhere between Christmas and New Year's Eve. That Stewart may not be "allowed" to attend the birth of his own child is beyond contempt. So a midwife (or make that several shifts depending how long it'll take Frances and the baby to part for the first time) is ok, but the person who shares the birthing mother's household is locked out? Let's leave it there before smoke comes out of one of my orifices and I'll spontaneously combust.

Kafka, Orwell and Huxley are my holy trinity. There are other authors who tapped into the same vein. How could they have possibly foreseen what would, not just now but as far back as, say, 1984, Big Brother et al, would creep up on us? Creep up on us by stealth, in almost unnoticeable increments. Those authors' absolute nightmares might have been called (then) "dystopia". Unimaginable. Yet, the future will arrive, become the present and, with a bit of luck, the past. By which I mean a past someone, as yet not zombified, is around to remember

As to the tiers it's just so much bullshit smokescreen, YP. The government needs to be seen as doing something, anything. So let's blind people with what you so rightly call "a mixture of laws, rules and advice". So which one is which? Main thing is to not hug your elderly mother. You might kill her. I'd say, yes you will kill her, prematurely, by not being "allowed" hugging her on what may be her LAST Christmas. Or whatever. Birthday. Or just any old Sunday, like today. I saw a most poignant photo - an elderly woman in a care home, touching the window from inside, pressing her hand to that of a man (son, brother, husband?) on the outside. It's an outrage. I can see the gravestones now "He/she went to her/his grave COVID-free". Hurray. What a life time achievement. Heartbroken and bewildered more like it.

    1. Here's something that would have helped with care home visits. A glass or perspex screen. On each side a microphone and a little speaker plus an easy chair then Shazzam! A comfy visit - just lacking any physical contact. Besides it was the Johnson government that gave the green light for transfer of COVID patients back to care homes.

    2. And once again, Ursula, you pontificate on matters of which you are not qualified to voice an opinion. Just because a midwife or midwives are not guaranteed to be virus-free, does not mean that this fact obliterates the need to keep the mothers' risks at whatever minimum they can manage. And to let people hug their beloveds in care homes or in their own homes is truly asking for mass deaths. But perhaps to your mind that is okay because hey- those old people are just going to die anyway. Might as well let them die having hugged the deliverers of that death. This is sentimental bullshit thinking. Better to keep these "elderly mothers" alive until a vaccine is firmly in place and the virus risk has been reduced considerably so that they may perhaps have a chance at many more years of hugs and kisses. If they are exposed and die, that chance is completely eliminated, not to mention that when sick, before they die, they will be utilizing the health care system to the point where it is indeed completely overwhelmed. One does not get the virus and then die gracefully and painlessly in bed no matter how convenient that would be.
But I am sure that you will disagree, being neither an elderly mother or a health care worker.
Perhaps though, you are indeed an expert on dystopian novels. I do not challenge that.

      Delete
    3. My, my, Ms Moon. Whatever gets your goat I am happy to oblige.

I pontificate? Ok. And you point out, calmly and serenely, that which YOU, Ms Moon, believe. I am "not qualified to voice an opinion" yet you are. Fair play.

How do you propose to explain to a demented parent/sibling/whatever or just a lonesome one why you don't see them any longer? They wilt like plants wilt without water. But, yes, sure, at least they are being kept ALIVE. Artificially. Insert snort of derision.

"Sentimental bullshit"? Ok, whatever you say. May that fate of many an elderly carted back from hospital wards into "CARE"homes, denied all contact with those they still may recognize, not befall you.

As to the rest of your reasoning . . . sorry, haven't got the time to pontificate some more. We all might die any minute now. No Virus involved. An aneurism will do. We'll all die. At some point. Quality, Ms Moon, quality not quantity is what makes life worthwhile. And if, on my deathbed, my son isn't allowed to hold my hand because he might transmit the mysterious virus to me I wish I'd never lived.

      U

      Delete
    4. Well, yes. I was a registered nurse and I suppose I am a more elderly mother than you are.
You cannot explain to a demented person why you can't see them for a time. They will not understand and probably wouldn't remember a day later if you had visited. So- that's neither here nor there.
I don't understand the rest of that paragraph or the next one. "May the fate of many an elderly carted back from the hospital wards into "CARE" homes, denied all contact with those they still may recognize not befall you."
Are you suggesting that if an elderly person gets the virus and then is hospitalized and then recovers that...what? They go BACK to the care homes from where they lived before and where they got the virus? I don't understand. Or are you suggesting that they would be better off just dying from the virus, thus preventing future "wilting"? Or what?
Of course we will all die from one or more of a myriad of reasons but to expose the elderly in care is to also expose those caring for them who then go on to expose others and so forth. Is this so hard to understand?
Tell someone who is in a medically induced coma and is intubated and wearing diapers that his or her quality of life is important. I think they might agree with you and wish that they still had the quality of life they had before becoming ill.
The virus is not "mysterious." We know how it is transmitted, we know how it affects the human body, we know how to prevent it. People just do not want to take the steps required to do so.
And I would hope that all of us have a loved one to hold our hand as we die. But if I am dying of covid, I would not want to risk the chance of my loved one getting it from me as I take and expel my last breaths.

  6. No one has raised the very real possibility of the NHS not being able to cope with large numbers of Covid patients.
Nobody quoted Gabriel Scally, Professor of Epidemiology, Royal Society of Medicine, who said that large gatherings over Christmas will lead to another spike.
New Scientist had a cover story about the Long Covid: the longer term damage.

Granted, the Health Minister is out of his depth, but I am worried that lock-down fever will play into the hands of the conspirators, all those naughty wee boys making up stories about the Great Reset. Conspiracy theories fester when voters are disconnected from politics: Gordon Brown wants to address this growing problem.

In a face to face interview David Icke can barely string two words together, but he has a pathological need for attention, and his performances in Trafalgar Square (YouTube), before his loud-mouthed fans, was like watching a pot-bellied Mussolini, whipping up the mob in order to gratify his own will to power.

Granted, Icke is a loony, but globalisation has left many people behind, without a voice. Low wages, limited job opportunities, trades unions representing public sector workers only, the wounds and divisions of Brexit still festering ... all this leads to social unrest, made so much worse by this life-threatening virus.

    2. Family life was more stable in our childhood, though I am not overlooking the fact that there were neglected children, bad fathers, violent husbands, women trapped in unhappy marriages. All too belatedly Ireland legalised divorce. Roy Jenkins (former Home Secretary) said that Mrs Thatcher's governments did not repeal any of Labour's *permissive* legislation.

If Covid-19 had hit the post-1945 world the British people would have been more compliant, more co-operative. Or if you like, docile. They had come through the Depression, war, and then post-war austerity. There was a polio outbreak in my childhood; I saw children with crutches. Last week I watched a YouTube film of an American man who spent much of his life in an iron lung.

An odd fact. Our parents' generation were not tactile. They were not such huggers. My Uncle George was very close to his granny, who died while he was a soldier in Italy. He said he cannot remember her ever cuddling him. He wept when he learned of her death. My mother said he ran out their tenement house.

Icke's message about *taking back control* touches a nerve because of our political disconnect. In calling our flawed politicians *psychopaths* and *fascists* Icke is only inflaming impressionable minds. Politics is the art of the possible as Rab Butler said. It calls for a workable manifesto.

I think The Trial is about metaphysical power, the forbidding deity of the Old Testament. The Castle is about temporal power, the old Austro-Hungarian Empire.

There is a well-argued thesis by Javier Cercas, *The Blind Spot - An Essay on the Novel* (2016 MacLehose Press).
Great fiction writers create an enigma, a mystery which they leave the reader to solve, if it can be solved. Kafka is the master at this, which Cervas calls the blind spot.

The book's art cover is Melville's harpooned white whale, its enigmatic eye unblinded.

Our president (and thankfully, not for long) has given up entirely, leaving his fans to believe that Covid is a mere flu, nothing to worry about, that it was invented in order to control the population, that vaccines will make us all zombies in the service of Bill Gates, that so-called "freedom" is more important than the spread of the disease, the ensuing deaths. In other words- that science is bunk.
    Carry on. Party on. Etc.
And this of course endangers all of us and overwhelms the health care system which pleads for stricter regulations, for more careful behaviors and which continues to take care of the masses of sick and dying, some of whom, even on their death beds continue to insist it's all a hoax.
