Neighbourhood

It occurred to me that visitors from other lands might like to get a sense of where I am writing from.

We live at the top of a long road - the house numbers go from 1 to 204. Our road runs parallel to Ecclesall Road which is the main artery leading out of the city of Sheffield to the south west.

In less than five minutes I can walk out to that main road where I can catch buses or visit the post office, local shops, a pharmacy, a Chinese takeaway, a fish and chip shop, "The Banner Cross" pub, two smaller micro-pubs, various hairdressers, a cobbler's shop, various estate agents, a newsagent's shop and a Persian bakery etc.. This afternoon I needed to renew my "Lotto" ticket at the Sainsbury's local supermarket so I took my camera along.

It was a mild but grey November afternoon with no sign of rain. For a change, I decided to present these photos in black and white apart from the picture at the top which I took when looking  in the window of Blundells estate agency.

  1. I do truly wish I could try some absolutely authentic fish and chips.
You seem to live in a quite interesting and diverse little corner of the road. Quite interesting! I enjoyed this post. Thank you for sharing your world.

    1. When you and Glen come over to visit us, I will take you to Whitby's fish and chip restaurant on the edge of the city. Even better we could go to the coastal town of Whitby where they serve the best fish and chips in England at The Magpie Cafe.

  2. Obviously no big box stores in this area. It's good to see the small businesses striving.

    1. When we moved here in 1989 there were four banks on that strip and now there are none. Nothing stays the same for long.

  3. It looks a very interesting street, so many diverse shops all together. I think I would love to wander there and eat fish and chips, maybe even do a little shopping. It all looks quite lovely and serene.

    1. I would buy you a pint of bitter in "The Banner" and you could tell me all about Adelaide.

  4. Sorry YP, the black and white images (excellent though they are) do make everything look so dreary. I know that some photographers prefer black and white, but that's not the way we view the world. We view it in colour. The world is in a miserable enough state without having to view it in shades of grey.

  5. You have many useful amenities right on your doorstep.
The reason we made our recent move from rural to town was to enjoy the same convenience.
Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your surroundings.

  6. It was a good choice to show these pictures in black and white. Thank you for showing us around your neighbourhood. So Neptune has given up reigning the Seas and is now running a chippie; I guess even gods have to move with the times and find new things to do when people have stopped believing in them.

    1. Ha-ha! Nice one! Neptune's wife Salacia batters the fish and chops up the potatoes in the back room.

  7. It's a shame that you can't really get 'Free Cash' at Sainsbury's.

  8. No medicinal cannabis or tab/vape shop in your high street? At least you have a tattooist to draw a butterfly on your ankle.

  11. I thought I had left a comment last night but who knows. I like the photos but the black and white really make the images look like they were taken in the 1950's or 60's. It's nice to be able to walk to so many services and wish I had that. Nothing is close where I live.

  14. *We live at the top of a long road.*
I like the sound of that, like a Barstow short story.

I would enjoy a pint of bitter in the Black Nag and bread from the Persian bakery.
Toast with blackcurrant jam or black cherry is better than cake if the bread's good.
And you have a real butcher shop though I haven't touched beef in three years.

I have only discovered Cummings Your Way and he forms a bookish trilogy in my mind with yourself and Tasker.
Born in 1968 Cummings reminds me of the late Ian Nairn (YouTube) with a bit of Sillitoe & Braine as well.
He is a canny interpreter of English townscape and its copses and dales.
*Wychbury Hill* takes him to the Black Country which obsesses me in its own way as much as the Bronte Country.

  15. Although I think it would be neat to live in such a place, I'm not sure I could do so for a long stretch of time. All the small shops and the convenience of walking appeal to me but I know that it would be fairly noisy compared to my standards where generally the only thing I hear at night with the windows open is the occasional Barn Owl hoot or Coyote howl.
