Glorification

I think that the immediate release by NBC of Cho Seung-hui's "media package" is utterly sick and reprehensible. In his very troubled mind, it seems that Cho Seung-hui sought notoriety - to go down in legend. NBC have effectively given the bastard what he wanted and out there in the back woods and the ghettos of America and beyond there will be unwholesome, twisted young people just lapping it up. Seeds will be sown in warped minds. But this isn't "Rambo" or "Nightmare on Elm Street" - this is real life and those poor victims at Virginia Tech will never see another sunrise.

My heart also goes out to the families and friends left behind. Surely, NBC should have respected their grieving instead of inflaming it with Cho Seung-hui's wicked and self-obsessed media gift. In many ways, it would have been better to simply destroy the package, instead of letting the whole world unwrap it only 48 hours after the horror happened.

I thought the lad was studying English Literature - so how come he produces this rambling comic book drivel...?:-

"You have vandalized my heart, raped my soul and torched my conscience. You thought it was one pathetic boy's life you were extinguishing. Thanks to you, I die like Jesus Christ, to inspire generations of the weak and the defenceless people.

Do you know what it feels to be spit on your face and to have trash shoved down your throat? Do you know what it feels like to dig your own grave? Do you know what it feels like to have your throat slashed from ear to ear? Do you know what it feels like to be torched alive? Do you know what it feels like to be humiliated and be impaled on a cross and left to bleed to death for your amusement? "

What a load of crap!

    Hi, yp...

I applaud what you've written here and in your previous post. Many of my family, including two of my elder brothers are Tech Alums.

I've spent many happy days in Blacksburg, myself, and this is been very difficult for all of us. I am a Virginian by birth, and the media treatment, while predictable frankly, has been such that for the sake of my own young children, we've had the TV off for days.

I can only think of the familes and loved ones of the victims at this time. And, again, thank you for writing.

  2. Horrific.

But this type of incident will continue happening until the US does something about its gun laws and its attitude to guns.

  3. What I don't get (and what Michael Moore pointed out in "Bowling For Columbine"-- MM is not an authority to me, but his question is still a good one) is how Canadians have just as many guns as Americans, but only a fraction of the deaths. It's more than the loosey-goosey gun laws. There's a thread of malice coupled with antagonistic insanity that is prevalent like an invisible but deadly gas. It's fear. Many of us are very, very afraid.

  4. ECBLADE - Solidarity across the waves. We're better and stronger than that crazy murderer...
MUTTERINGS - How could anybody see guns as some kind of symbol of freedom and human rights? Guns are bad news. When you possess a gun you will sometimes think of using it. Like 98% of British adults, I don't have one.
ALKELDA - Canada's population is much smaller than the USA's. A mass murderer in Manitoba might have trouble finding victims. "Hey I'll just shoot a moose instead!"

  5. Sorry to disagree. I own guns. Why, because I feel safe with them. Because for generations my family has owned guns. For as many people in the US that have guns and don't use them for harm, you would take away our guns for that small minority who use them for harm. Sorry it doesn't even out. In Britan do people not murder? In Any Other country do people not murder? Blow each other up? Sorry. I'm not turning in my gun for anyone. How many people die in cars, how many people murder with cars, do you advocate taking the cars away? If someone wants to kill they will find a way. I've been around for 54 years, I have never known anyone who did harm with a gun. Can't you own rifles and shotguns in most parts of the world? You can do a lot of harm with those weapons. I frankly am tired of people getting down on America and blaming the gun laws every time something like this happens. It's horrible -yes to be sure, but did all these people advocate not allowing Middle Eastern People to fly after 9 11. I didn't see a hue and cry over that. And no I don't believe that every ME person is a terrorist, And I don't believe in those kind of restrictions, but hollering about gun laws to me is just that ridiculous. I loves ya Pudding man, but I can't agree with this one. I'm very tired and may be ranting, but ... there ya go.

  6. BY GEORGE - Oh my, I feel like I've had my pants puled down and my bottom spanked! Not a bad feeling! Yes there are murders in the UK but far less per thousand than in the US because thank heavens when we get mad with people we don't have the facility to go wham! wham! You're dead!
However, I find your position very interesting as it probably represents a widespread attitude across the USA.

  7. By George, it's this "I have a gun, generations have always had guns, never did me any harm" attitude to which I refer.

As I understand it, it is quite easy in America to buy a gun? My dad had two shotguns - he shoots pheasants, pigeons etc with them. But he is licensed, checked and must have a secure place to keep them. The police come round and do checks.

Perhaps if the US law was more like this, the mass murderers wouldn't slip through the net quite so often.

The gun laws in this country were changed after the Dunblane massacre. Fingers crossed, something on this scale has not happened again here...

  8. Sorry I still don't think that punishing the millions of law abiding and moral people who choose to have guns and respect the guns and other people because of the few that do criminal acts with them. And I'm not a cow boy, I don't belong to the NRA, And I firmly believe if you want to kill someone you will do it, base ball bat, what ever. It gets done.

"I have a gun, generations have always had guns, never did me any harm" attitude to which I refer." this is not what I said.

Maybe the reason we have more murders per capita..if we do I haven't checked, is another reason?
Maybe its simply because we are so big. I don't know.
I'm not a hick I am college educated. I am a democrat. I just see things from a perspective of having lived in America for my entire life. So make fun if you want mutterings by taking what I say and twisting it. But I will keep my gun.

  9. By George, I am not making fun. I don't think of guns as something to make fun of - they are weapons of destruction. I don't think that's funny.

But I do think your country needs to look hard at itself and its lax gun laws.

As I said, it is difficult to legally get a gun in this country. It is not in yours.

  10. Now, now BY GEORGE and MUTTERINGS. I think there are only two ways in which we might sort out this disagreement between you - either pistols at dawn or my preferred option - naked transatlantic blogger mud-wrestling which I will be happy to referee!

At least in the spoken word, he avoided castration for incorrect capitalisation!!

  12. You will always have nutters in this world and they will always find a way of doing themselves and others harm.
By the way... worldwide traffic accidents kill more people than bullets... should we ban cars?
Just my .50 Cal. thought. :-)
