Bravo!

Earlier this week, a rowing boat arrived in Antigua in the West Indies. It had been rowed all the way from La Gomera in The Canary Islands. The journey took sixty eight days and the distance covered was almost three thousand miles.

The rowers were all women aged between 45 and 51 - Niki Doeg, Helen Butters, Frances Davies, and skipper Janette Benaddi pictured below on the far left.
The name of the boat? "Yorkshire Rows" and where are these four brave women from? Yorkshire of course!

I know that some of you out there are dismissive of feats like this, thinking - What's the point? But I salute these four women and am in awe of their courage - not only in achieving their goal but in doggedly organising the adventure with sponsorship, simply getting the boat built, media coverage and back-up support etc.. None of this can have been easy. Bravo indeed!

  1. Yes....Bravo, indeed!

I certainly wouldn't do it; but that's because I am me and they are who they are. I wouldn't have ever even thought of wanting to do it. I don't understand why someone would want to do things similar to what these four women have done (and others like them who take on these "adventures"), but that's what makes us individuals, isn't it?

Good on them for fulfilling their dream and for having arrived safely at their destination.

    1. Now go and fulfil your dream Lee! A slap up meal at "The Three Little Pigs" in North Tamborine. Your best local restaurant according to Trip Advisor - and no mountainous waves in sight!

    2. Yes, it is a top spot, Yorkie. Originally when I came here to the hill (and before) the establishment was known as "Forests Cafe" and it was a hive of industry; very popular. And then it changed hands a few times, but now that the original owners etc., are back again...it is once more what it once was, just with a name change.

I fulfilled my dream of cooking in restaurants many times over, Yorkie...in various restaurants in various areas - between Brisbane and Cairns and many places in between and afar....I'm too old and decrepit to do so now! :)

    3. Silly gal! I meant eating the meal not preparing it!

  2. You read my mind - I often wonder why people put them through this sort of thing, especially those elderly American sailors who were forever having to be rescued back in January.

But if you're going to put yourself in harm's way, you may as well do it in style like these four did!

    1. First you would need to practise - perhaps a rowing boat on The Serpentine to begin with...

    2. Probably nothing but people I admire or give the benefit of the doubt to are ladies and for example Thatcher was that bloody woman. There are several women like her.

  7. Good for them. Brave ladies. One can't help admiring their fortitude and determination, as February is definitely not a month to go for a row in the Atlantic. I love Antigua, but can think of much easier, but perhaps less exciting ways to get there. Not something I'd want to do, but a rousing round of applause for them.

  8. That's quite an accomplishment, especially for middle aged people. I'm not even 41 years old yet and attempting something like that would probably be the death of me!

    1. They did it and you could too Jennifer! It's all about motivation and team work. Get three other gals together and aim for a crossing of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Lake in Richland County. I will be happy to sponsor you. $5 just to get the ball rolling.

    3. Yes Jennifer! There really is such a lake in your fair state! Google it.

  9. All that planning and organization would take some of the fun out of the adventure. However it is a very challenging action that was achieved.

    1. I would like to sponsor you and your son to row or canoe across every lake in Canada. C'mon Red! You can do it! It will raise lots of money for charity.

  10. Your post made me realise that I'm at the other end of the world where, despite the close bond between the two countries, this hasn't even, so far as I can see, had a mention here so I didn't know they had completed the task. Although 'task' is far too insignificant a word. Their achievement does show, however, that the mind can achieve so much (with a little help from the body of course). I salute them.

  11. Well done for them; undoubtedly, THE experience of their lives. I do understand to a certain extent why people set themselves a goal and work on achieving it, but I lack the ambition to try anything harder than the 10-km-run which is held in Ludwigsburg each summer.

    1. Well that's a pretty demanding thing to do Meike. I am as sure as hell that I couldn't do it.

    2. Well I've done it 3 or 4 times in the past but not for the past 2 years. This year, though, I really want to run again.
