Memes

Just yesterday, I referred to the following four politicians. All deservedly ridiculed in these memes. Overseas visitors may be confused about the Liz Truss birthday card. During her short time as prime minister a British tabloid newspaper kept a lettuce in a fridge to see if it would last longer than Truss. Famously, the lettuce won!

There's nothing like a good photo opportunity.

  1. How come clowns think they should be leaders?

    1. It takes a special person to wear a fake red nose and big floppy shoes.

  2. I still think BY and DT are related, perhaps born into the same family and both given up at birth? Or at the very least they're from the same gene pool, probably sharing an ancestor or two.

  3. It was rather funny about the lettuce. I never learnt who set that up.

    1. It has all been about fakery with him. From the Brexit bus with its false promise to his parties that weren't parties.

  5. If it was an homegrown lettuce it would be all shrivelled up by the end of the day. I am sure they spray something on them to prolong their shelf life. I am talking about the lettuces not the politicians. But there again...🤔

  6. I have almost given up being political. I cannot believe that we have such stupidity at the top of government. The worst though is that these idiots are supported by other idiots! Where will it end?

    1. It will end in a cavern in the mountainside - as in "The Pied Piper of Hamelin". Johnson was our piper though, like the guitar, he could bot play his pipes.

  7. The book I recommend to everyone:
*The Light That Failed* by Ivan Krastev & Stephen Holmes* Penguin 2020.

It has much to say about the Trump presidency and those who voted for him.
Chosen by writers of the Economist as Book of the Year, admired by thinkers as diverse as Michael Ignatieff and George Soros

Why did the hopes of liberal democracy fail after the collapse of the Soviet Union and its satellites ?
Why the rise of anti-liberal populism on which Trump rose to power ?

Trump argued that the Chinese miracle had been a disaster for the United States.
*We built China,* Trump said in condemnation of American policy.

Unlike his predecessors in the White House, Trump did not believe in American exceptionalism.
America, he argued, should act like a selfish nation in a world of selfish nations.

Ivan Krastev is a fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.
Stephen Holmes is Professor of Law at New York University School of law.

    1. As long as it is not too academic with regard to economics, I think that this is a book that would grab me. Thanks for the signposting.

    2. It is not in the least academic re. economics & geopolotics.
It reads like an essay in The Atlantic or New Statesman.
The title is from the only novel Kipling wrote after Kim.

Kipling is back on the syllabus but not Clayhanger or Riceyman Steps by Arnold Bennett. A new biography of Bennett gives reason for hope.

I wonder if other writers will make a comeback ?
A.E. Coppard, Caradoc Evans, Somerville & Ross, Ivy Compton Burnett, George Moore, Rose Macaulay, Henry Green, Stevie Smith, Margian Evans, James Hanley ?

For years I have been meaning to order Hanley's late novel Dream Journey which appeared in 1971 and is available from a used bookstore in England.

Emily Rhodes, who writes about the arts for the Financial Times, has a walking-reading club in Hampstead and a good YouTube vlog.
