Detention

Here, on American Independence Day, I was going to rant about the inhumane treatment of economic migrants and asylum seekers at America's southern border. I was going to continue ranting about the secret Facebook page that Border Control agents have been contributing to in their thousands - demonstrating horrible, insulting disregard for the desperate foreign people they are incarcerating in conditions that are not fit for dogs.

I was going to highlight the way in which small children have been cruelly separated from their parents and the paucity of childcare. And of course I was going to reflect on the way in which the 45th president's nasty attitudes towards migrants and asylum seekers have filtered down to Border Control minions, legitimising racism, sexism and sheer cruelty.

However, I am aware that some American visitors to this blog are Donald J. Trump supporters and out of courtesy I have decided not to rile them on this July 4th by expounding upon the issues noted above. Besides, I am English so arguably I have no right to comment on events happening in the USA. After all, how would I like it if American visitors called by this blog deriding our beloved queen? Yes. These are reasons why I have decided to keep schtum about what is happening at America's southern border.

Instead, let's just read a slice of what the eloquent New York Rep Yvette Clarke had to say earlier this week: "I’ve heard a lot of language about who these people are on our southern border. Let’s make it clear: They are seeking refuge in the United States of America. We send funding around the world to refugee camps, in nations that are war-torn. And here we have, on our own border, the most horrific detention of humankind in this generation, in the United States of America. We cannot abide with this. We will not abide with this."

In the summers of 1976 and 1977, Skip at "Skip and Ray's" Bar  on Kinsman Road, Novelty, Ohio always referred to me as "The Limey Bastard" and I have no wish to resurrect that nickname so yes, I am going to keep quiet about the migrant detention crisis - leaving it up to others to petition for infinitely more humane treatment of  desperate strangers in "The Land of the Free".
Yvette Clarke: "Those who would prey upon defenceless individuals,
women and children, who are seeking refuge in our nation, must be
purged from our federal service, so that we can recapture who we
are as a nation, which is a nation who has welcomed refugees, a
nation that has welcomed immigrants, and a nation above all
nations, that is great because of its immigrant tradition."

  1. There is nothing you could say here about the man who has presumed the presidency or what he and his minions and his party have done that could possibly upset me more than just the truth of what is happening.
Speak the truth and fear no man. Or woman. Or reader.
    Fuck 'em.
Just please know that there are many of us here who are as horrified and angry and terrified as anyone in the world. A lot of us are not celebrating today. There's just no reason.

    1. Where President Obama brought dignity, civility and intelligent compromise to The White House, President Trump has brought fast food, nepotism and government by angry tweets. The contrast is astonishing...and so as they always say - God Bless America!

  2. Australia also has some horrific detention camps. Both nations would consider our selves some of the most civilised in the world. What a disgrace

  3. Oh, Pudding, I admire your reservation. But you can go ahead and rant about my country's asshole attitude anytime you want. There are so many of us who hate Trump and et. al. It's actually rather nice to see that the rest of the world holds him in complete contempt. We are in despair.

    1. I am pleased that I have not offended you Dianne. One day Trump will be gone. Let us hope that the next president brings wisdom and healing instead of pompous tweets fired off like bullets.

  4. This is our nation's birthday and all I can think is that if the men that founded our country could see it now they would hang their heads in disgust. I never believed we would see the things we are seeing now.

  9. There's nothing you can say about Trump worse than I've said myself plenty of times, and there's nothing you can say about him that would offend me. And do you seriously have Trump supporters reading here? Why would you care what they think?

    1. Yes. Several Trump admirers call by here though most of the time they remain silent. I would care what they think because I want to re-visit the USA one day and I don't want them blocking my re-entry.

  10. I would like to add to Yvette Clarke's words: "...and a nation that, if you consider how it started, consisted mainly of immigrants originally."
My country seems to have learned from its horrible errors and wrong, cruel way. As a people and as a government, we are definitely not what we were 75 or more years ago. One could argue that we let too many come in, but how could we not?

    1. Yes. Germany had a historical dilemma to face up to and has shown more liberalism and more welcome to new immigrants than any other European country.

  11. Ms. Moon and I are as one on this subject. What is truly offensive is his administration and the destruction it has already caused in so many arenas-- not just in the US--and which they continue to perpetrate. A blight on the nation and the world.

    2. Well, he doesn't personally know any talented and/or politically astute Americans. So there you go.

  12. No matter what you say about Trump it is not enough, but there are so many others who feel the same, they have no humanity. But unfortunately the world has too many economic migrants and rather than governments work a way out they are using cruel tyrannical methods to try and get rid of them. It is up to us as ordinary people to speak out and give migrant dignified temporary camps and then a way to work out their future lives.

    1. I agree that ordinary people have a vital role to play in standing up for what is right. Turning a deaf ear or a blind eye is oftentimes a criminal act.

  13. L.B., I would never point out that in refraining from saying what you wanted to say you said it anyway, just as I would never describe your queen as old and past her prime and ready to be replaced.

  14. “Limey Bastard” — LOL! That’s kind of awesome, actually. You are a human being, and as such you have a right to say whatever you want about our horrible president.

    1. I can say whatever I want? Oh good. I say this...Isn't it truly magical that Trump can occupy the demanding presidential role presumably still with the terrible bone spurs that kept him out of the war in Vietnam in 1968?
