Holymoorside

The images that accompany this blogpost were gathered today when I undertook a six mile walk out of the village of Holymoorside west of Chesterfield. The starting point was just twenty five minutes from this keyboard and Clint did not complain about the run out.

For mid-September, the day was unseasonably mild and I was wishing that I had put a T-shirt and shorts on.  By the time  I  reached the top of  Nab Lane I was sweating like a pig  with five and a half miles still to go.

On Harewood Moor these three young sheep turned to look at me. They were but lambs in the springtime - frolicking and gambolling  as lambs are wont to do...

Wild roses near Harewood Grange....

And oh, it was good to be out. Putting in the miles and rebuilding my strength. I did not encounter even one other walker and at the end my feet felt like lead weights  as I trudged back up the hill to Clint where flasks of cold water were waiting in his boot (American: trunk).

  1. Ah, fine photographs which let me enjoy a lovely virtual walk, and that without a single drop of sweat upon me.

  2. It never ceases to amaze me that you can go for a long walk and not meet anybody.

    1. Perhaps they see me coming and warnings are then put out on mobile phones.

  3. Beautiful scenery all the way. I had lead weight legs and feet myself on the way home from the shop this morning, it's only a short walk, but I guess the muscles haven't yet recovered from the garden work I did yesterday.

    1. Sounds like you need to join a gym River. You will need a pink leotard in lycra. Please post pictures.

    2. Yikes! What an image! No no no! Besides, gyms here are hellish expensive and none close to my home.

  4. Such a long walk in warm weather, and you left the water in the car?
Anyway, I am glad you had the chance to be out and once again experience the joy of putting one foot in front of the other.

    1. I glugged a pint of water before setting off. That was enough.

  5. Glad you enjoyed your walk. Surprised that you didn't see a single soul the whole time you were out. No-one to tell you their life story or a catalogue of their ailments.
The sheep look quite inquisitive and perhaps they had a story to tell?

    1. They would tell a tale of exploitation and persecution going back many generations. It's a dog's life being a sheep!

Why do I know the name Glendale Farm?
Those mushrooms look delicious. You should collect some and have a fry up.
It's always good to embiggen your photos. Is that Heather in the last photo?

    1. Yes it is heather Andrew - but it is past its flowering period now. Fly agaric is an hallucinogenic mushroom.

  9. A nice picture of the fly agaric. I have never heard of such a mushroom so had to google it. Evidently it is poisonous but edible. One must parboil it a couple times first to lesson the toxins before consumption unless ones wants to hallucinate. I also learned that there are three subsets of the fly agaric and one theory suggests they all originate from Alaska since it is the only spot in the world where all three subsets can be found.

    1. I guess that mushroom spores can travel far upon the wind. It is sometimes said that fly agaric may have spawned the Santa Claus mythology - with flying reindeer etc..

As always, lovely photos and fresh air.
