Yesterday

The Beloved Daughter was up very early yesterday morning. The Pleasant Boyfriend was keen to take a winter walk and see the sun coming up over The Hope Valley.

It was still dark when they set off in Shirley's little Korean car but I noticed a lightening in the eastern sky. (Please note the spelling - "lightening" and not "lightning"!)

I wasn't feeling well. That's why I was up to see them off. The urge to blow disgusting gunge through one's nostrils  into toilet tissue tends to disturb one's sleep.

At about eight o'clock, I was back in bed and managed to grab another hour of sleep in which I dreamed that I had deliberately sliced off my right foot with an ultra-sharp machete. Hopping around forevermore I was starting to regret the action when to my enormous relief I woke up from this disturbing dream, happily discovering that my right foot was still intact.

The Beloved Daughter isn't an athletic out-doorsy kind of young woman. When she is back in this house one of her favourite occupations is to curl up in her room and sleep so I applaud The Pleasant Boyfriend for getting her out in the countryside at such an ungodly hour on such a wintry morning.

They returned before midday having completed a bitter circular walk around the hills above Castleton. Living in London this will be a great memory for them  to take into the new year. The Devoted Mother made them bacon sandwiches while The Snotty Father took a look at The Beloved Daughter's smartphone pictures. The best one is at the top of this post just as it was at the top of Cave Dale. If I might be so bold, perhaps she has inherited my talent for nailing a good picture.

  1. I'm sorry to discover you are of a snotty nose...

'Tis s'not what I desired to learn from your latest post. I do hope the dreaded, ludicrous mucus departs as quickly as an unwelcome doofus!

Frances shows an inherited gift for photography, it would appear. :)

    1. Thank you for your kind attention Matron. Now haven't you got to give someone an enema?
BTW - Your lads have been saved by the rain in Melbourne! Just our luck.

    2. Our lads didn't need saving. The Boxing Day Test was just a dead rubber, anyway. We already have the Urn...we earned it!

    3. Our lads just need to save face by winning one of the remaining tests. We don't want another whitewash.

  2. That's a stunning photo and yeah, why not take some credit for her brilliant eye? It's really a gorgeous picture.

Yikes, that is a drastic dream. I happen to enjoy interpreting my husband's dreams so I'm just going to pose the question: Have you, by any chance, recently done something that felt like shooting yourself in the foot? (Do you have that expression over there? It's like being hoisted by your own petard.)

I hope your cold doesn't hamper the New Year festivities. Feel better soon.

    1. Yes Vivian we do have that expression in England but its origin is uncertain. Regarding the dream, it might be connected with the fact that our son bought us an exceptionally sharp knife for Christmas - that and the fact that I have often suffered from a bad knee this year. Thanks for calling by again. I hope you had a lovely Christmas.

    1. Yup! You southern softies don't know the meaning of the word "cold".

  4. Well, you can all be glad that you aren't on this side of the Atlantic! Parts of Mars were warmer than Winnipeg yesterday and at present Canada is colder than both the North and South Poles - New Year's celebrations have had to be cancelled in Ottawa as the temperature will be Minus 29C (before the windchill factor). Read the article! :-)

    1. I guess I don't know what "cold" really means. I hope you have got your thermal underwear on Margie. Any chance of some photos?

    2. Sorry I don't really know how to load pictures - but I'll see if I can find some to send.
PS - The World Junior Hockey tournament is on in NY and today is the BIG game between the US and Canada - and it is being played Outdoors at the Buffalo Football Stadium! People are still skating at our outdoor rink at City Hall and people will still go about their business - no choice - we just dress up in layers - and always cover your ears!

    3. I wouldn't want to be a homeless person in that kind of weather.

    4. We have patrols that go out specifically looking for people in distress on the streets and the city has opened extra warming centres with beds & food and medical care. The problem is, many won't go to shelters and if they won't go voluntarily the police aren't allowed to pick them up. The patrols do a great job handing out hot food & drinks, blankets, sleeping bags etc. but it's still difficult. And in the summers it gets so hot that cooling centres open for the very same reasons (we can get to well over 30C with a lot of humidity so a whole different set of problems).

    5. I must say you are not exactly "selling" Toronto to me Margie. Please don't apply for a job with the Toronto Tourism Bureau as you would probably bankrupt the city!

  5. That photo is stunning, daughter has most certainly inherited your photographic skills. I hope you feel better soon. Use a hanky when you sneeze, I don't want to catch your cold.

  6. Thank you Margie for letting YP know that real cold isn't to be found in Yorkshire, they're no more hardier than the rest of us in England!

    1. Old age? You are just a young lass Jennifer. Perhaps one day he will pop the question. I hope so. They are on the verge of buying a London flat together.

  8. That picture is gorgeous. Margie is right about the weather. I broke down and bought long underwear and ski pants so I could still walk.

    1. I think it's a good thing with Britain's weather that we never experience really cold winter weather. Even minus 10C would be very unusual.

  9. The photo is brilliant, like a painting (and that is definitely a compliment).
I hope your daughter is now of the opinion that every now and then it is really good to go for a walk or hike, especially if you live so close to such beautiful countryside.
Sorry to hear you've caught a cold. I hope you're not spreading it to all your family, and that it passes quickly. I can't remember the last time I had a cold; definitely not this year.

  12. That really is a lovely shot; I am sure your daughter has absorbed and internalized what good photos are made of, from regular exposure to them while growing up.

I do hope your snotty nose ceases and desists producing snot in very short order.

  15. We have all got or had the lurgy down here. I have lost my voice for the first time ever (no remarks thankyou. lol) and find it difficult to sleep as I have the squeaks with every breath, so annoying. I am improving slowly. Hope your lurgy soon improves.
    Your daughter's photograph is beautiful.
