Hooray!

Yorkshire Day

August the first is Yorkshire Day!
Our hearts lift up, we shout hooray!
From Flamborough Head to the Pennine Chain
We  cheer our county once again
Dear blogging friends, for what it’s worth
There’s nowhere better on this Earth
You can keep your Sydney and L.A. too
Your South Sea isles and your Timbuctoo
I would rather walk a Yorkshire street
With Yorkshire ground beneath my feet.
From Middlesbrough to Malham Cove
Our county is a treasure trove
Of coastal path and rolling dale
And foaming pints of Yorkshire ale
Where people use their common sense
No empty words  or proud pretence
A land of graft and imagination
Surely The Lord’s very best creation
So drink and feast and dance away
August the first is Yorkshire Day!

  1. And, for what it's worth, the horse's birthday!

I want you to know I'm reading all your posts on my phone but had to give back my borrowed lap top so comments will be few and far between

  2. In the words of Michael Caine "Not many people know that" I am sure you'll be pleased to learn that 1 Aug is also Swiss National Day - fireworks and all.Which was very nice for my father when my parents lived in Switzerland as 1 Aug is his birthday. So, YP, thanks for the reminder. I shall be on the blower (voice pipe) forthwith to wish him a few more returns of the day.

    1. Will it be his top half or his bottom half celebrating today? I don't think there is such a thing as Cockney Day but if there is you should celebrate it with jellied eels and bottles of Mackeson. Mmmmm! Delicious.

  4. Is there a white rose left in all of Yorkshire for decking the halls of Pudding Manor?

    1. Our palace is festooned. In fact I am even wearing a coat, a hat and underpants made entirely from white rose petals.

  5. ”And foaming pints of Yorkshire ale” sounds lovely! You often mention ale in your posts Neil - what is the difference between ale and beer?

    1. Ale is a type of beer brewed using a warm fermentation method, resulting in a sweet, full-bodied and fruity taste. Historically, the term referred to a drink brewed without hops. As with most beers, ale typically has a bittering agent to balance the malt and act as a preservative.

    1. We are planning to rescue those parts of Yorkshire that were ceded to the Lankies by the Tories back in the early eighties. We must free our people from tyranny!

  7. August the first is Yorkshire Day
Our hearts do sink with deep dismay
From Southport's sands to the Pennine moors
We dread to hear those white rose boors
Who bang on about their county's worth
The dreariest place on God's own earth
You can keep your Malham and Flamborough Head
Places where we wouldn't be seen dead
No Lanky could celebrate such disarray
When the Yorkist dogs have their day!

    Enjoy :)

    1. And isn't Yorkshire actually multiple counties? Like three or four?

    2. No Steve. Yorkshire has three ancient ridings - The North Riding, The West Riding and The East Riding. This division was purely for administrative purposes given the size of our great county. As for "graft" - in Yorkshire the term is applied to hard work. You might say of a builder. "Eee that lad can graft like bloody Hercules!"

  9. Steve got here first to make the "graft" comment!!

Love Shooting Parrots' poem too :)

Happy Yorkshire Day! I have to say, though, Nova Scotia is God's own land :)

I was going to bake a Wilfra cake (Wilfra being Ripon's patron saint) today, but with around 30 Celsius, I really do not feel like switching the stove on to generate more heat...
