Budget

The amazing "Bosh!" story continues. Our son Ian and his old schoolmate Henry have been working hard on their sixth book and it is now available for pre-order pending its release in early December I believe.

Some critics of plant-based diets put about the myth that being vegan is expensive. In this book Ian and Henry wished to dispel that daft rumour and prove that preparing good vegan food can be inexpensive. In fact, when you take the meat or fish element out of food you save yourself many pounds or dollars (Malaysia: ringgits).

Three weeks ago I was checking the final publishers' manuscript for errors and discovered something that made me grin from ear to ear. Ian had not told me in advance about this but in the desserts section of the book there's a recipe for "Neil's Tiger Bars"! In other words they are named after me with a nod to my lifelong support for Hull City A.F.C. - The Tigers! Though I have not yet eaten one of these bars I am confident that they will be amazingly yummy just like me. Sorry about the image below - it is a photo I took of page 203 of the manuscript:-

My immortality  is at last guaranteed!

To explore Bosh! start here.

  1. I can't think why something sweet and delicious would be named after you.

  2. I just LOVE this. You need to post the recipe for your bars.
Congratulations to Ian and Henry! They are not resting on their laurels, are they?

    1. I am not allowed to reveal the secret recipe ahead of the book's publication.

  3. Tiger is a mashup by Neil Cicierega. It samples Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" and other tiger related sounds such as Tony the Tiger's "They're grrrrreat!" It's not always all about you.

    1. On this occasion the bar is indeed all about me. I suspect that a Tasker bar would be rather bitter.

    2. Wish I could say that. I doubt there'll ever be a Tasker Tiffin.

  4. Wow, not many people can say they have chocolate bars named after them.

  5. Six books! Wow! You gotta make those bars ASAP. I laughed at your inclusion of "ringgits," but I'm sure your Malaysian contingent appreciated the mention.

    1. Glad you spotted the ringgits too Steve! You are very observant.

  6. Vegan food can be extremely tasty. It does, in my experience, take more thought and preparation. (and specific supplies) Baking was always tricky for my vegan daughter. Now that's she's vegetarian, it's much easier.

    1. In the last four years, Ian and Henry have always sought to emphasise how tasty vegan cuisine can be.

  7. I won't say what I think that looks like on the plate but it resembles things that arrive in the cats litter tray. lol

    1. You put "Picnic" bars and "Lion" bars in the cat litter too?

    2. Oh dear, my first thought was the same as Briony's - before I read her comment.

    3. Maybe the name should be changed to Neil's Turd Bars!

  9. How lovely, YP! I would be tickled pink if I were you!

Do you remember me mentioning a while ago that I saw a Bosh! book in our local discount store and left it for someone else to discover? It was still there when I looked next, so I bought it. It's not a recipe book but a book on how to live vegan. Do you mind if I write a blog post about it?

    1. Oh yes that book! I have read it myself. They were asked to write it by the publishers - Harper Collins. Don't mind at all Jenny. Canada is a free country... I think. I am not sure that all native Americans would agree.

  10. I thought you were about to apologize for the image of you as being yummy. (I don't even know you, so it really didn't leave a disturbing image)

I'm always looking for good vegan recipes and ideas. They're correct in that it's not expensive or lacking in flavor to eat a vegan diet. I'll have to see if any of their books are available through Amazon.

    1. I would be delighted if you secured one of their recipe books Kelly. Try to get the first one - simply called "BOSH!" with an orange and black front cover design.

P.S. I was joking about me being yummy!

    2. The local Lidl has suddenly gone vegan, even to the extent of look-alike ready meals and faux chicken pieces, etc. They are all parcelled up in plastic - surely not the "green" ethic veganism wishes to portray? After the awful ice-cream, I'm wary, as the food doesn't look particularly appetising. I will try some though - once I can see something that looks appealing enough to eat! Or I may have a go and make something myself.
The Spanish are great meat eaters and on occasions in the past when I've ordered a vegetarian dish it has come with fish. When I've commented on the fish - the waiter said that it wasn't meat! Apparently it was thought that vegetarians just didn't eat meat, but as fish isn't meat, it's quite acceptable. At the moment I'd question how strictly vegan many of the meals are that we have here.
YP., my comments are in no way meant as any criticism to Ian and Henry, and I admire them tremendously for starting such a healthy eating trend - long may they continue.

    3. Carol - Why not start by making a spaghetti sauce that does not include meat? Use chopped up mushrooms and possibly kidney beans as the base rather than mince?

    4. Carol - Look out for Swedish Glace vegan ice cream. It is lovely and light and we always have a tub of it in our freezer. You really would not guess that it was vegan.

    5. I'll do that - thanks for the tip. I often make a vegetarian meal, and use a tomato sauce - it's very useful as the basis for many meals.
The only vegan ice cream I've seen here so far is the one from Lidl. No doubt there will be more items in future, but probably not until the holiday season starts next year.

To quote, "The shopping bill was rather high this week".
"That's because we were low on meat.'

How anyone could imagine being vegetarian costs more, I don't know.

I can imagine what a pleasant surprise it was to discover the dessert named after you in the book. And like Steve, the inclusion of ringgits made me laugh. Not bad for a Monday morning!

  15. The "vegan is expensive" idea is a bit funny given that the first thing i do when wanting to save on groceries is cut the meat. Having said that, there are mock meats and pre-prepared vegan foods marketed to vast number of people who don't have the skills to adapt their favourite meals to vegan and don't know how to start with developing new favourites. These convenient vegan items are very expensive.

I think the book is a fabulous initiative and I'm wondering why it took six books before Neil's Tiger Bars popped up ;)
