Today we visited the little seaside resort of Filey just up the coast from Flamborough.. The first thing we did when we got there was to step inside the town's small folk museum which is entirely run by volunteers.
There, mannequins have been used in a vain and rather amusing effort to suggest the lives of Filey residents of the past. It was once a fishing port with its own fleet of unique boats known as "cobles".
The thing about mannequins is that they are modelled upon perfect human figures but the ordinary people who inhabited history were generally far from perfect. I have noticed this funny contradiction before - mostly in other small museums. When money is tight you need to get creative.
Villain in the town jail...He could be Cro Magnon.
And finally this is a view of Filey's lovely beach washed cleaned by high tides twice a day..
The Mannequins are kinda scary, but the beach looks perfect!
ReplyDeleteDogs are not allowed on this section of the beach between April and the end of September.
DeleteCould that be Meike Riley,
ReplyDeleteIn the museum at Filey?
Meike Riley looks nothing like that
DeleteSo sling yer hook and grab yer hat!
Meike Riley would NEVER paint her face with blotches of rouge!
DeleteInteresting bunch you have there.
ReplyDeleteA sandy beach in the UK? How amazing.
Most beaches in Britain are sandy. The pebbly ones are nearly all on the south coast.
DeleteI think the mannequins look great! I love the clean beach.
ReplyDeleteFiley beach is one of my favourites Elsie.
DeleteWe had a Prime Minister with similar eyebrows to the first mannequin.
ReplyDeleteIt's a long walk to the sea at low tide.
It's is indeed a shallow gradient. That is why the sea comes in so far at Filey.
DeleteThey might come to life like the film 'Mannequin'. Starship sing the title song "Nothing's Going To Stop Us Now". Are you visiting Scarborough? I spent many an holiday there.
ReplyDeleteLOVE that movie.
DeleteSpooky...
ReplyDeleteDear God. Those mannequins need to go. Can't they display the clothing and whatnot without having it hanging on fake bodies?
ReplyDeleteThe mannequins are a sensible answer to manning the museum with volunteers. At first glance they look almost human, but they are a bit spooky!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful beach.
You could model for a new museum mannequin.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! I don't think we use mannequins here for small museums in that way. Perhaps when I was a child I saw a few in a museum near the Atlantic Ocean. The hair is what freaks me out. It's like the mannequins are one type of attempted reality, the hair another. But I think I'd like to visit that place.
ReplyDeleteI like the mannequins! Your photos are zooming in instead of stepping back and showing us the whole scene, Neil! None of us would look good if the camera was zoomed in! :)
ReplyDeleteThe first one is Tom Stephenson
ReplyDeleteThose mannequins are fantastic. Madame Tussaud, eat your heart out!
