Amy

Normally, I don't really do heroes and heroines. The cult of celebrity has become an obnoxious sideshow in modern life, so that things that really matter are often smothered by tittle tattle about nobodies like the Kardashians.

However, over the past year or so I have become quite  a fan of an American political reporter called Amy Goodman. She heads up a show called "Democracy Now!" which puts a very different slant on political, social and environmental happenings - principally though not exclusively in The United States. I find it very refreshing.

This show is the obverse of "Fox News". It investigates police shootings, environmental disasters and of course shadows the latest moves of the Trump administration. Interviewees are given time to explain themselves properly because "Democracy Now!" isn't looking to muster trite soundbites. Instead, it seeks to get at the truth.

Amy Goodman has a calm, pleasant and dignified manner but underneath that you detect someone who is passionate about social and environmental justice. In her questioning she can be like a dog with a bone but she is always respectful of those she quizzes.

"Democracy Now!" has taught me a lot about ordinary American life behind the gloss, putting a different slant on things. I usually watch it on our local TV channel - "Sheffield Live" but it is also available to view over the internet. Go here. To see the latest show go to "Daily Shows" on  the top bar.

  2. Social justice is the key. Take away the competition for election.

  4. I'm just so over politics, here, there and everywhere at the moment.

Instead, I removed myself from the "real" world, and I spent my Sunday afternoon watching some brain-dead TV shows I'd recorded. I thoroughly enjoyed doing so.

I spent(some might say "wasted" - but, that's okay... they were mine to waste)most of the afternoon catching up on re-runs of the fun old show from the mid-Nineties until early Noughties - "Nash Bridges", starring Don Johnson and Cheech Marin.

Now, I'm about to watch this week's episode of "River", followed by "Silent Witness".

    1. Watch too much TV and you'll go cross-eyed like Clarence the Lion.

    2. Well, that would be my own cross to bear, wouldn't it be?

I make my own choices, and answer to no one other than me...and my two furry rascals. They rule the roost. I have little say.

They enjoy spending Sunday afternoons (and other times) watching TV. They watched a documentary last night about some of their relatives...so they were chuffed. It was about George and Joy Adamson - and Elsa, the lion (of "Born Free" fame), and the other lions they worked with.

Remy and Shama are hanging out for re-runs of "Clarence and the Cross-Eyed Lion" to return, and are always checking the weekly TV Guide.

    3. My mother used to say that girls can be very catty and this comment proved that.

  5. I have almost opted out of all news until after the election - I am so tired of politicians promises. If they promise thousands to help (e.g. mental health issues) then why aren't they doing it now?

    2. But we all know that politician's promises are made to be broken !

  6. Reporters have become very rude and aggressive in recent times it seems to me. It's good if they have some degree of respect regardless of the person they are interviewing.

    1. Good manners. Letting people finish their points. Not butting in. These are not characteristics of most modern journalists.

    2. You should go to YouTube and watch Stephen Colbert's opening monologues each night on The Late Show. Hilarious. Or better yet, John Oliver's show (Last Week Tonight) for funny AND informative.

  9. I haven't come across this show or reporter yet - looking forward to checking out some clips. It drives me crazy when reporters interrupt an interviewee with a new question just when they are getting to the meat of their answer to the first question. I'm looking forward to watching a reporter NOT do that!
