Perhaps we could have made a more peaceful world for you to enter with more harmony between nations, more respect for the natural environment, less killing and less poverty. But it's not all bad. Not by any means. You will discover sunrises, awesome sunsets and music and beaches where waves break and forests where birds sing. And you will laugh and make friends and you will love and be loved.
Your life will stretch far beyond my time but in the years that I am part of your life, I pledge to be the best grandfather that I can be. We will feed ducks in ponds and I will push you on swings and if you ask me questions, I will answer them with honesty.
Be good. Be proud. Be kind. Understand that every human has their own story to tell. Laugh. Listen. Love. You only get one crack at life and your voyage began this very day. As they used to say to mariners Margot - God speed!
With love,
Grandpa Pudding

A beautiful girl and robust! I love the name; it was my nom de plume in high school French class.
ReplyDeleteWe also approve of the name Margot.
DeleteShe's beautiful. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Pudding.
ReplyDeleteShe has my genes so of course she is beautiful! Thanks Nurse Lily.
DeleteMy heart is bursting for all of you! What a gorgeous child! Beautiful letter to her from her grandfather. Much love from so many of us who truly do care about her arrival on this earth.
ReplyDeleteVery kind. Thank you Mary.
DeleteWhat wonderful news! Welcome, beautiful Margot! (I love her name).
ReplyDeleteShe was going to be Poppy which is a fine name for a dog!
DeleteCongratulations to everyone once more! The grandparents must be quite giddy with two new babies to enjoy! Margot is a lovely name. How is Phoebe taking the new arrival?
ReplyDeletePhoebe was watching "Peppa Pig" at our house and didn't wish to consider the fact that she now has a baby sister.
DeleteShe is a delightful wee Pudding. God speed indeed, precious creature.
ReplyDeleteThere'll be plenty of "wee" in the months to come SM.
DeleteYou're getting in some practice with letters to new borns. I said it on the last that I hope they keep your letter.
ReplyDeleteI think that's the last one I may ever write - but you never know because Ian and Sarah might decide to have another child in a year or two.
DeleteCongrats to Mommy and Daddy and Grandma and Grandpa and all the Puddings!! Mazel!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Bob. If the new baby had been a boy I would have approved of the name Robert - so many possible variations.
DeleteCongratulations one and all - and lovely letter. I hope you are around to remind her of its contents as she enters adulthood.
ReplyDeleteMaybe one day Google will delete this blog and all others too if they decide to call an end to Blogger. Then my letter will disappear.
DeleteAw, your baby cup runneth over. Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteFive years ago I would have put money on us never having any grandchildren.
DeleteOh what happy news! Congratulations to everyone. Welcome, Margot.
ReplyDeleteMargot says, "Whaah! Whaah!" which means thank you Debby.
DeleteI was thinking she looks to be a good weight, then you said 9lbs 14oz! She's a whopper compared to "my" twins. And she is beautiful. Your letter to her is equally beautiful.
ReplyDeleteKind response. Thank you Elsie.
DeleteHappy birthday, little Margot!
ReplyDeleteAs your granddad says, it could be a better, cleaner and more peaceful world (after all, we know how to do it - we just don't), but it is the one we've got, and there is still plenty of beauty and love in it, and you will discover and explore more of it every day.
Oh, and from one little sister to the other: At times, big sisters can be annoying. But they love us to bits, and we fully return that feeling, even if we don't always show it.
The relationship you have with your sister is very special Meike and I hope that as the years pass, Phoebe and Margot will forge a very similar bond.
DeleteProficiat on your granddaughter Margot and what sweet photos!
ReplyDeleteShe was given a beautiful name.
Met hartelijke groetjes van
Lian
So kind. Thank you Lian.
DeleteCongratulations to all and a special welcome to the world to Margot
ReplyDeleteMaybe those photos bring back memories of when your Kay came into the world.
DeleteWelcome little Margot and congratulations all round. You are right that Poppy is a dogs' name, I know 2 at least! However, some years ago I used to walk a dog called Margot! It is a lovely name .
ReplyDeleteI used to know a dog called Frances. It growled a lot and sniffed at men's crotches.... Only kidding - thanks for your kind message Frances.
DeleteHello Margot, such a sweet little pudding.
ReplyDeleteShe is now one day old. Hopefully she has at least 32,000 to go.
DeleteCongratulations! She's beautiful, and what a lovely name too. She has such a gorgeously expressive face - it made me smile. I do hope that Phoebe will love her new little sister, although at the moment she's not going to be as much fun as watching Peppa Pig!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your kind response Carol. Thank you.
DeleteCongratulations to you and the happy parents (and Phoebe too)! Margot is a wonderful name. Does "holding fire" mean there's a debate about the middle name? I've never heard that expression. I wonder where it comes from. Must look it up.
ReplyDeleteMargot could not have chosen a better birthday, by the way. :)
Scorpios tend to be quite vicious with a sting in the tail! "Holding fire" is I believe a military term.
DeleteCongratulations, 2 babies in one year, so much fun to come.
ReplyDeleteTwo babies in ten days! I was kind of hoping that they would be born on the same day!
DeleteMargot means Pearl. Many congratulations to you all. Babies first Christmas 🎄 soon.
ReplyDeleteIsn't Christmas to do with a baby? I can't remember.
DeleteLook at those eyelashes, she'll be fluttering them for grandad one day. Congratulations for two happy births.
ReplyDeleteIt's a big relief that all is well with both mothers and both babies.
DeleteWe done Mr. Pudding. You must be exhausted.
ReplyDeleteIt's a hard life being a grandpa.
DeleteThe future.
ReplyDeleteSomebody's got to live there.
DeleteCongratulations... again!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ed. It's like a baby factory over here.
DeleteWell done, Frances! That's a beautiful, big baby girl you had! Please feel free to use "Ellen" as a lovely middle name! :)
ReplyDeleteBest wishes, Margot, for a fabulous life! You will love your big sister and she will love you! I'm a big sister so I know this is true.
Congrats, Neil! What a lovely bunch you have to cherish!
I think Ellen would make a great second name and I will suggest it to Frances but I am afraid she has other notions in mind.
DeleteWelcome to the world, little Margot!!
ReplyDeleteI've been checking this blog daily, waiting for the news. I'm so glad it all went well. Now you and Mrs. Pudding can relax and get busy spoiling all those grandbabies!
We will be heading down to London next week to see Zach.
DeleteI’m. Very happy for you all xx
ReplyDeleteSo kind. Thank you John.
DeleteShe's beautiful! May you & Margot have many good years together.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and best wishes to all!
I hope she remembers me sweetly and not as a dementia patient in an institution.
DeleteMany congratulations to you all. May life be kind to her. X
ReplyDeleteThat's a simple but worthy thing to ask.
DeleteOnce again, congratulations to all concerned.
ReplyDeleteThere won't be another one next week! Thanks Bruce.
DeleteCongratulations on Two New Grandchildren. They both are precious! Love your birthday letters to them. An annual ritual? x0x0 N2
ReplyDeleteThanks N2. Appreciated.
DeleteSsssssss...weeeeeet photos. What a dolly. Lucky you.
ReplyDeleteThree "normal" healthy grandchildren. Such a blessing.
DeleteDo I have a comment in your spam folder? I was sure I wrote one earlier! :)
ReplyDeleteDon't fret. It's there now Ellen.
DeleteCongratulation for your new granddaughter , a lot of babysitting
ReplyDeleteIt's good that we are only nine minutes walk away.
DeleteCongratulations to the whole family on the birth of baby Margot and wishing her good health, good luck and happiness. I wish you many happy times ahead with your beautiful grandchildren.
