  2. I improved this week with a 90%. I missed Madagascar. I got Zanzibar in my head for some reason and couldn't get past that.

    1. If you fly over to England I can give you a crash course in world geography. Better still you can buy me a plane ticket to Sydney.

    2. Do you offer geography courses by zoom?

    3. No. We find we need to be face-to-face in person to advance our instruction programme.

  7. I knew you meant Tasmania to be the answer for 1, but New Zealand could also be an answer. It just depends how far! Living in Sydney I think of Tasmania as off the southern coast, albeit at the eastern end.

Even now I think it might be theoretically possible for NZ to join Australia as a seventh state in accordance with the (UK) Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900 under which the various states were brought together in 1901.

    1. You are clearly a bright chap Marcellous but not bright enough to realise that New Zealand consists of not one but two major islands. Also, "lying off Australia's south east coast" suggests closer proximity than 2500 miles.

    2. Well, of course, you are the teacher, sorry, quizmaster, but:

      1. "island state" not the same as "one-island state;"
      2. Internet tells me "shortest distance (air line) between Sydney and Auckland is 1,339.90 mi (2,156.36 km)."
      3. I was going to offer some fascinating numbers about the number of islands in Tasmania, NZ, and in (England + Scotland + Wales), until I saw your cunning deployment of "main island."
      4. Likewise I was going to offer as an example of usage the classic text "Our Island Story" until I worked out that the island in question is a fascinating initial fudge of England (part of an island), Great Britain (England Scotland and Wales (slipped in)) with a further fudge to bring Ireland.

Not so much bright as restless and in year 9.

    3. I shall skulk in my fetid cave until dinnertime. I bet real TV quizmasters don't have to cope with such surly feedback. A quizmaster should be allowed to exist unchallenged on a higher plane - like a God of knowledge.

    1. Until I set the question, I didn't know either. I had to doublecheck it. By the way, last night on "Pointless", Ripon scored zero along with Dunfermline. The question was: Name British cities that do not contain the letter "a".

    2. That‘s not a particular hard question, is it! Even without really thinking about it, I can rattle off a list of names (Ripon included).
