Korčula

Korčula seen from our room
We went to Korčula today. It is an island off the Croatian coast. In fact you can see it from our hotel room - across the Strait of Pelješac - the sea channel between us.

The main town on Korčula is called... wait for it... Korčula. Its most ancient parts crowd round the main church on a small peninsula that is redolent with history. According to legend, the island was founded by Trojan hero Antenor in the 12th century BC. During the Byzantine period. the town was an important staging post and its limestone alleyways still echo with the sounds of a rich, long and influential maritime heritage.

Unfortunately, I had not fully charged my camera battery so I did  not gather the number of images I might have done today. Still, I collected enough pictures to provide you with a flavour of our trip across the water. And especially for dog lovers I have included a photo of a black hound we spotted in a first floor window. He was desperate to get outside.
After four hours over there we jumped on the ferry back to Orebic and returned to our hotel from where I swam out to a distant orange buoy that I clung to before swimming back to the shore. Dinner this evening was again scrumptious and when wine and beer are effectively free, why stand on ceremony? Hic!

  1. Some lovely scenes, especially the mountains rising up behind your hotel as seen from the ferry. The hound looks a little scary though. Glad he was inside, not out.

    1. Driving up from Dubrovnik you had the impression that this part of Croatia is just a thin coastal strip with mountains forever rising behind it.

  2. It looks beautiful there. No bugs? No screens on the window, at least! That dog's owners must trust him not to try to jump, but poor laddie :)

    1. It was a long way down for that black hound. And no bothersome insects to speak of.

  3. A beautiful area. I hope all the shark being served in the restaurant is from those waters you're swimming in...to keep swimmers safe!!

I don't eat shark....far, far better fish to eat, in my opinion...to my taste. There is no way I would order it. I know it's rather popular in our southern state of Victoria, where it is called "flake"...We're not flakes here in Queensland! :)

We do need a lot of water to be pumped from the ocean at the moment...bush fires are raging all around. Drought conditions certainly don't help. The situation is very bad. We need rain...and lots of it...but none is predicted. So far, here on this mountain plateau, fingers crossed...we're okay...but down below in the valleys...and other surrounding mountain top areas the situation is dire.

    1. I am sorry to hear of the bush fires and hope that Tamborine Mountain continues to avoid that awful threat.

    1. It was a last minute choice but it seems we picked well. Good value too.

  5. I think that photo of the black dog in the shadowed window is one of your best.
I am NOT jealous of your vacation. (I keep telling myself that.) But it does look so beautiful and sounds lovely too. History, the sea, old architecture...
    Yeah.
Really glad the food is good. That's always a bit iffy when you do the all-inclusives. Sounds like you got it right. And by the way- I realized that the coaster had your email in it. I'm sort of an idiot.

    1. Thanks for this comment Mary. I guess we are all "sort of" idiots from time to time.

  6. Your last photo might be a good lesson for us and land use. We use too much land for building.

    1. I wonder if black dogs are discriminated against as much as black people.

  8. Thank you for your holiday posts which have brought back wonderful memories of the first holiday abroad that my husband (to be) and I took way back in 1973. It was a 2 centre package - a week on Korcula and a second in Dubrovnik, costing £90 in total for both of us. Several things come to mind: the heat, the colour of the sea, the view from the cliff lift in D, the wasps! People still remembered the war and so the British were more popular than the German visitors. No doubt opinions have now changed! Vicki in the East Riding

  9. Looks idyllic YP. Have never been to Croatia, but your photos remind me of Turkey - many years ago.

    1. There is a lot of green here. A lot of green and clear sea water. I think that we have hit upon a very good week weatherwise CG.

  11. LOVE the dog photo! I know very little about the history of this part of the Balkan peninsula -- so it's interesting to see and hear something about the communities there.

    1. I am also pretty ignorant about Croatia Steve. This one week holiday is a good platform for learning about the country.

  12. It looks very beautiful. I don't know much about Croatia either, other than the war in the '90's. My step daughter's boyfriend is Serbian and very messed up from the war.

War, the gift that keeps on giving for generations. The same thing happened to my own father in WW11.

That took a dark turn rather quickly, sorry. Have a lovely holiday.
