69

69? No, not my age and certainly not the intimate activity that crossed certain minds.No. 69 is the total number of photographs taken by me in 2016 that were shortlisted in the geograph picture of the week process. Fifty two weeks and sixty nine nominations. That's quite an achievement and I am rather proud of it even though only one of my shortlisted pictures made it to the Number 1 spot:-
Lunchtime drinker in "The Old Red Cow", London
Taken in May.
Every week between 2,000 and 7,000 photographs are submitted to geograph so to make the top fifty 69 times proves that I am getting something right. It adds credence to my belief that I have a good eye for a picture. On my various country rambles with camera slung over shoulder, I am always looking for the perfect shot, the best light, special moments to capture. It is partly what motivates me to walk.

I realise that some visitors will be puzzled about the term "geograph". It is a British-based photographic and geographical website that invites users to portray the 315,000 square kilometres of our islands with mapped pictures. Within the site there are statistical and competitive elements and it is always interesting to see scenes captured by other contributors. To visit the home page of geograph, go here.

My 69 nominations seem to tell the story of last year - at least my story.  Beginning with some industrial premises off Carlisle Street in Sheffield and ending with The Rawson Spring Container Bar at Hillsborough, the nominations include pictures from The Isle of Man, Spurn Head, London, Liverpool, Huddersfield and of course my beloved Peak District. It's a magnificent mosaic and this is just a sample of it:-
If I was to be pushed to come up with a personal Top Three from my nominations, I might well choose these:-

In Third Place:-
Taken in February at Stanage Edge.

In Second Place:-
Taken in November further along Stanage Edge

In First Place:-
Taken on my birthday under the arches at Borough Market near London Bridge.

  1. Congratulations! Indeed, that is an achievement to be proud of. Your photos make up a huge part of your blog's appeal (not the only one). If it wasn't for the personal touch I want to give my photo calendars, I could easily use your pictures only. I'd be spoilt for choice, though, and could probably never decide which ones to use.

    1. Thank you Meike. You are very kind. Did you see the comment I left a few days ago thanking you so much for your calendar? It is now up on the wall of our study and we will enjoy changing the page at the end of each month.

    2. Yes, Neil. I saw it and (I think) I replied to it, too. Glad the calendar arrived in time!

  3. Well done. You certainly have an eye for a good photo. I particularly like the ones of the man in the pub and the hang-gliders. I had never heard of geograph before and had to look it up to see what there was of my area.

    1. HA-HA-HA! What do the mysterious emojis at the end mean? Is it some secret code you learnt while working for IBM (ie CIA!)? I hope it wasn't rude.

  5. Congratulations! Your photographs are always a delight and I'm glad to see the judges have such good taste! I'm determined to visit England one day soon and I would love to accompany you on a couple of scenic walks that you've shown us pictures of. What do you say? Will you be my Yorkshire tour guide one day?

    1. Of course I will Jennifer - if we are not on holiday ourselves - but given the location of Sheffield, the scenic walks are more likely to be just over the border in Derbyshire.
Have you thought of renting a little cottage? Would you rent a car? On a tight budget you might want to avoid pricey London. Will it be you and Gregg or just you on your own? If necessary, I can answer questions and give advice too.

    2. It will be at least a year. And Gregg might go, but honestly a couple of my book club friends and I keep talking about a trip together so it may end up being a girls only trip.

    3. A bunch of women together would really help costwise if renting a car and possibly a cottage.

    4. That's what we were thinking, too.

  7. You shouldn't be just "rather" proud of your achievement, Yorkie...be outright, upright, damn proud of yourself. Aye! You have a good eye! Congratulations! Well done.

  9. 69 nominations, eh? it's a very good number, congratulations!

My favourite is your #1. It reminds me of some older areas of Sydney, haunts of my youth.

I wish you lots more wonderful photo opportunities

    1. Good heavens! How were you employed when you were young in the older areas of Sydney? I hope I am not being indiscreet. Please don't respond if you would prefer not to rake up the past.

  14. Well done indeed, YP. It's certainly good to have a reason when walking the hills and dales.

  15. Well, I've only just begun walking the pages here, but the pictures are astounding, no wonder they give you credit for them!! The choice of motives are often similar to what I often go for, only MUCH better quality when you handle the camera!! Great gift you have there, mr Pudding, along with the stingy sense of humour!!!
