Statecraft

"Our republic is a responsible nuclear state that, as we
made clear before, will not use nuclear weapons first
unless aggressive hostile forces use nuclear weapons to
invade upon our sovereignty,"
- Kim Jong-un speaking at The House of Culture
in Pyonyang. North Korea May 1st 2016

  1. I hope he sticks to that!
I think Trump is the wildcard in this situation, though

    1. Kim Jong-un has been painted as a cartoon character in a graphic novel. Perhaps it's not as simple as that.

    1. Furthermore, if that little fat turd....oops...typo alert..."toad"...is so responsible, why are the North Korean people living in poverty...are kept ignorant of what is happening in their own country as well a being ignorant of what is occurring in the rest of the world...have no internet access, living in virtual darkness etc., while he and his cronies live the good life?

Is that responsible government? If Kim Jong-un wants to play with the big boys it's time he faced facts; it's time he grew up...and it's time he becomes a decent, responsible human being.

I guess it's also time he read the history re the Second World War. He could possibly learn a lesson or two to his advantage, which would also be advantageous to the people he governs.

I won't be holding my breath until that happens, though.

    2. Don't be bashful Lee. Say what you mean! I take it you are not planning a holiday in North Korea any time soon.

    3. You may have noticed I've already said what I meant, Yorkie!

I am straight-shooter. In most instances - nine times out of ten - I'm a "black and white" person - as I am sure you've already guessed by this stage.

There's no point beating around the bush...doing so is just an unnecessary waste of time, and it flattens the bush. :)

  3. This quotation sounds relatively sensible, but there's a disturbing streak of paranoia that runs through the North Korean leadership. Who knows what he's capable of, really. (The same is true of Trump.)

    1. Why can't they just agree to a hand wrestling contest?

  4. States-persons keeping their countries in the dark as to what is really going on in the world is not new nor is it only applicable to NK.
The truth is hard to come by in any country: a past example is the weapons of mass destructions that were sought out by the armies of the US and UK as in Bush/Blair syndicate that attacked and destabilised Iraq !

  5. I suspect we are all pretty much in the dark as to what is happening anywhere - the News only tells us what 'they' want us to hear. I no longer listen to it. Life is too short.

    1. "They" are good at pulling the blinds down over some news items. Yemen springs to mind but when is the last time we heard anything about the current situation in Kyrgyzstan... or Burkina Faso?

  8. I don't know what to think, really. I don't think Kim is worried about his people or even his dynasty, but I do think he is fighting for his own political future. I heard a man from South Korea say yesterday, "You know, the leaders of North Korea have to tout their strength and bluster every once in a while just to show the rest of the world that they are still there."

    1. Kim Jong-un is not a cartoon figure and yet the western media has often portrayed him as a laughable two-dimensional megalomaniac like The Joker in "Batman".

  9. I've now caught up with all your posts. You are getting more bellicose by the day. I was surprised, by the way, that you didn't jump at the idea of painting the bedroom years ago now that you are retired. Manual labour such as that is not just a 'proper' job but it keeps you off the streets.

    1. Why do you want to keep me off the streets Graham? After all, I am not into mugging folk.

    2. Hmmm. Well. I'm sure that I could find the occasional verbal mugging in the metaphorical streets of Blogland.

  11. So sorry I missed you Neil - are you up here for a few days?
If so give me a ring - we are in the book and I would try to arrange to be in. Thanks for the salmon!

    1. I was up in Galloway over the weekend. On the way back I decided to make a detour to visit The Tan Hill Inn for the first time. Looking at my road atlas I saw that I could easily carry on via Bellerby and hoped to surprise you. Now I am back in Sheffield. So sorry we didn't meet today.

I think it's time we sent Ambassador Dennis Rodman out to Pyongchang. Then again, the day that Donald Trump allows a black man to be the hero...

    1. I think that Dennis Rodman would make a much better president than Mr Trump who, in my humble opinion, is an asshole.
