Admission

Perhaps I am just a heartless guy, but I must admit that I do not care a fig about the bitter legal endgame in Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's unlovely marriage. They are not even British citizens - they are Americans. Despite that, in British print media and in national TV news channels we have been asked to follow every twist and turn as their unsuccessful marriage suffers an ugly disintegration in a court of law.

Marriages end every day so why on earth should we be remotely interested in the "he said"/"she said" epilogue to Depp and Heard's troubled life together? It is just not worth thinking about

There are many important newsworthy matters that get very little attention - such as the ongoing conflict in Yemen and the parts played by Saudi Arabia and The West in that forgotten country's decimation. Why should that matter less than the fine details of a drunken row in Depp and Heard's marital bed chamber?

Those who pick "The News" wrongly imagine that little people like us are obsessed with celebrities and what they get up to. However, I am sure that I am by no means the only objector to all this celebrity nonsense masquerading as proper news. We just don't care.

If Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were dropped  in The Gobi Desert with a tent and some basic supplies,  I would be happy because then I wouldn't have to hear another goddamn thing about who said what and who did what. So boring. Besides, it is all so startlingly obvious that their court room drama - played out in front of millions - is all about the money. That's all.

We too are suffering their personal news. At the risk of adding fuel to the fire, how did such a pretty boy clean cut young man turn into someone who looks like he should be in a Godfather film? Australians know Depp better for when our Minister for Agriculture threatened to have the couple's dogs euthanised after being brought here illegally.

    1. The pet dogs incident tells you all you need to know about the kind of people they are - attempting to flaunt rules put in place to conserve Australia's unique fauna.

  2. I too would like an end to the celebrity drama. I also would appreciate less in the press about the royal family estrangements which are big news over here also. I. Don't.Care. I mostly scroll on by but as you noted, other important news gets bypassed for this unimportant drivel.

    1. When Prince and Princess Harry buggered off to California, we thought we might have heard the last of them over here in England but they keep resurfacing like toads.

  3. Much of the news is pathetic just like this story. It's about money and ratings. Somehow we have enough clowns who watch these stories to influence ratings and cash.

    1. Who makes "the news"? Ordinary people or media folk who THINK they know what we want?

  4. They seem to be two spoiled, entitled addicts. Couldn't care less about their marriage.

    1. No doubt if I was Amber Heard's dad or Johnny Depp's brother I would care a lot but they mean nothing to me.

  5. I'm with you on this one, sweetpea! It's on every damn channel over here and what's even worse? We're in L.A. and even folks who should know better have an opinion about these actors! xo

  6. Have you ever read the quote that goes something like this:
Small minds discuss people. Average minds discuss events. Great minds discuss ideas.
Too many people are only interested in other people's lives.

    1. I never heard that comment but it contains a core of truth. Some people are nourished by pettiness.

  7. Hear hear. Fully agree with you. Apart from prattling women at work we have managed to remain ignorant of the whole stupid saga, and you are so right about real newsworthy events going unremarked.

  8. While you and I and many others do indeed not give a fig about "celebrity news", I suppose a big chunk of the population do. How else can the still large print numbers of the so-called yellow press be explained?
Yemen is a tragic example of a forgotten catastrophe, similar to Sudan. And there are probably others we don't even know of, because they never made it to the headlines in our countries.

Personally, it always saddens me when a couple in my wider circle of friends/acquaintances split up. But there is nothing I can do about it, apart from offering my lasting friendship to both parties, when that feels right for me.

    1. Which came first - the chicken or the egg? It's the same with celebrity news. Did people hunger for it or was the hunger created by media producers? I care about homelessness and food banks and polar bears but these things rarely hit "the news".

  9. One of the benefits of being hard of hearing is the inability to follow the TV news. I read the online headlines and only click on the items that interest me. I remain blissfully unaware of that couple's shenanigans.

    1. You are very lucky JayCee. I would rather read about shenanigans in The Church House at Ramsey where Lord and Lady Peregrine regularly guzzle jerobaums of champagne with their guests and then play adult tiggy in the garden, disturbing their neighbours into the early hours.

    2. I agree. The whole mudslinging affair is becoming tedious and should only really be of interest to the two people concerned. It's the same with the celebrities that become famous for being famous, because they've appeared in programmes like TOWIE or Love Island or Made in Chelsea. Who really cares about every move they make?

  10. I'm fed up with hearing about them too. They are still in the newspaper pages, but I don't look at them anymore, there are more interesting news stories to read about.

  11. For the most part, I've simply ignored it. One truly can just scroll on.

  12. I don't watch news about celebrities at all so I didn't even know it was going on with them.

  13. I honestly haven't been paying a lick of attention to any of it. I see the headlines and move on.

  14. In the past this sort of facile news was used to fill in on a very "slow" news day. With current events in Ukraine and Yemen and other important news, I'm surprised that these two are even worthy of a mention.
I'm not impressed, or interested in, celebrities or certain ex-royals (we all know who) and I can honestly say I had no idea who Amber Heard is. Not that I care - but it's worrying that so much of the population consider them so important.
These days when I see celebrity names in the headlines, my first thought is - Who?
