Born October 14th 1973. Died May 25th 2020.
We shall overcome
We shall overcome
We shall overcome, some day
Oh, deep in my heart
I do believe
We shall overcome, some day
We'll walk hand in hand
We'll walk hand in hand
We'll walk hand in hand, some day
Oh, deep in my heart
I do believe
We shall overcome, some day
We shall live in peace
We shall live in peace
We shall live in peace, some day
Oh, deep in my heart
I do believe
We shall overcome, some day
We are not afraid
We are not afraid
We are not afraid, TODAY
Oh, deep in my heart
I do believe
We shall overcome, some day
The whole wide world around
The whole wide world around
The whole wide world around some day
Oh, deep in my heart
I do believe
We shall overcome, some day
A hymn for all times.
ReplyDeleteAnd what an amazing voice Joan Baez had. As clear as a bell.
DeleteI had to look up the song. It was hymn written by a black Methodist minister and first published in 1900. So little has changed it seems at times. Thank you for this.
ReplyDeleteWithout Pete Seeger's version, it would probably have been forgotten Lily.
DeleteVery good YP. Have you seen the new Banksy painting of a vigil and the candle burning the American flag?
ReplyDeleteNo. I haven't seen that Dave. I will hunt it down.
DeleteGreat words. Do you think we shall ever overcome all the hatred in this world?
ReplyDeleteNo I don't but that is no reason to abandon the struggle for a better, fairer world .
DeleteExcellent reply to a question being asked all too often any more!
DeleteToo many folks want to throw up their hands and simply give up trying ... thinking walking away will solve anything! It won't! We have to keep trying to make it a better world ... not just a country, but the entire World!
I agree with you YP. My question was more from exasperation that we strive but still it continues. I echo Graham's hope that the next generation will be better than us.
DeleteAny form of prejudice is anathema. Discrimination or prejudice based on the colour of one's skin is totally irrational prejudice and therefore difficult to understand. Something that is difficult to understand is difficult to put right. We can only hope that the younger generations see the irrationality, believe it in their psyche and bring change with them as they grow older.
ReplyDeleteI know that both of my children are carrying that torch Graham. My son was in Whitehall yesterday shouting "Black Lives Matter!" to the blonde buffoon in Downing Street.
DeleteAnd so say all of us.
ReplyDeleteHe was a jolly good fellow by all accounts but like the rest of us - imperfect.
DeleteBrings back memories from my teens for me (late 60s, early 70s)... (besides Joan Baez I also listened a lot to Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon and other folk/protest/gospel singers from that period - and they have remained favourites over the years)
ReplyDeleteIn this we are alike DT.
DeleteThe past ten days have been very hurtful, distressing and just plain awful. We can only hope that some day we WILL overcome the prejudice, intolerance and just plain ignorance! I hope that, before I die, I will at least see some progress and some changes that allow all of us to live as one.
ReplyDeleteImagine...
DeleteI hope that the current uprising is the last one needed.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it will be, but I DO think there will be good progress. And that is something.
The extent of police violence caught on actual video during the protests is extremely concerning, though. They don't even care if they're on record. There's a lot of work to do to get rid of both the bad apples AND the systemic problems.
Sadly, that work may well be never-ending.
DeleteOh, we so believed that we would overcome ... and then life took over and we didn't.
ReplyDeleteWe'll just have to start all over again and do it properly this time
Overcoming may always be an ambition.
DeleteWhen you read the history of the bitter struggle that African Americans have had to endure, which continues even to this day, then I fear that we will never learn, and they will never experience peace.
ReplyDeletePerpetual struggle.
DeleteThat's a beautifully drawn mural. I read about the incident and saw the riots on CNN. So sad, nothing is gained by violence, could there have been another another way to get their message ?
ReplyDeleteSometimes it is the only way to make authorities listen. History has told us that.
DeleteThis does bring back memories. When I was living in California in the early 70's I spent some time at The Joan Baez Institute for the Study of Nonviolence. I did see her around a few times but unfortunately I never had the opportunity to speak with her.
ReplyDeleteShe was probably nervous about meeting you Bonnie.
