Lullaby

"Golden Slumbers" first appeared on The Beatles' "Abbey Road" album back in 1969. It was resurrected by the band Elbow just before Christmas last year for another iconic  John Lewis T.V. commercial. By the way, John Lewis is the name of a chain of top quality British department stores.

I don't know why but this morning I woke up with "Golden Slumbers" playing in my head. Sometimes modern artists can pick up old songs and breathe new life into them - arguably surpassing the original version. I think that that's how it is with Elbow's version of this lovely, simple song:-

  1. I've never come across this song, neither the original nor the cover version. I wonder why not, as I did listen to all Beatles' albums in my childhood.

  4. I had to look up the John Lewis ad you mentioned. Awwwwww. Now whenever I hear Golden Slumbers I'll think of the friendly plush fellow, waving good bye and sweet dreams.

    1. I don't know what the ad had to do with John Lewis merchandise... I guess it was just the "feelgood factor" they were seeking to convey.

  5. Great way to wake up. When I lived in England as an Air Force brat, we rented a partially furnished house (the owners were in Aden) and the "Daily Express Community Song Book" (1927) was on a book shelf. I was taking piano lessons, and loved playing the melodies in the book, including Golden Slumbers. When we moved back to the States, I carefully packed that book with our household goods, but even though I was stealing it, I think it wanted to be used and loved. I sang the song to my children when they were small, not in the Beatles version, but I love that version, too.

    1. Well. You have taught me something Kate. I had no idea that the song had an older heritage.

  6. That is a nice version -- very faithful to the original. I like Elbow, but for me, nothing surpasses the Beatles.
