- Porridge
- Mini shredded wheats with hot milk
- Crunchy nut cornflakes (not Kellogg's) with slices of banana.
- "Ready Brek"
- Muesli with some nutty granola and blueberries on top.
- Wholemeal or granary toast with peanut butter and strawberry jam
- Wholemeal or granary toast with marmalade
- Wholemeal or granary toast with honey
- Wholemeal or granary toast with "Marmite"
- Poached eggs on toast
- Boiled eggs with toast
- Bacon sandwich
- French toast with maple syrup
- Toasted teacake with treacle
- Toasted muffin with treacle
Of course it goes without saying that every one of these breakfast choices is accompanied by a pint mug of strong tea with added semi-skimmed milk and a spoonful of sugar.

I usually have a slice of toast with peanut butter and raspberry preserves and/or a bowl of dry cereal, along with my standard two cups of coffee. But today I had apple pie ala mode!

DeleteMushrooms on toast, also cooked tomatoes on toast. In fact my one slice of toast can take any number of things ;) 2 Weetabix with plenty of sugar. Cold meats and cheeses is a good German breakfast, and I often fancy it but as I don't eat meat it is off the menu.

DeleteMy breakfast is lovingly prepared for me every morning by my adoring husband and every day is the same. One slice of granary sourdough toast with a teaspoon of raspberry jam accompanied by a large mug of very strong Lavazza filter coffee, with a splash of semi skimmed milk.

DeleteI always eat breakfast, but not before I've gone for my morning walk (which is about 2 miles). Weekdays are usually cold cereal or hot oatmeal (which I think might be a little coarser than what porridge is made from?) and weekends I bake scones, muffins, or prepare pancakes. Occasionally there is peanut butter toast. All plant-based, of course.

DeleteI vary between fruit, usually a mix of banana, pineapple, melon and strawberries; cereal; oatmeal; toats; and one day a week I make myself an egg wrap, with eggs cheese, bacon or sausage, inside a large flour tortilla.

DeleteThe most common breakfast eaten in this house is cheese toast. I top slices of nice whole grain bread with sharp cheddar cheese and pop them into a hot oven until the bottoms are brown and the cheese starts to melt and bubble. It's my husband's favorite food to eat first thing in the morning, and now the dog, George, has come to expect a small slice of his own, torn up on top of his kibble. (Marco gets a crust with lots of seeds on it. Yes, our animals are spoiled!) Sometimes I have a bowl of oatmeal with walnuts and brown sugar instead, or a bowl of cold cereal (Raisin Bran, Wheaties, or Cheerios) with a sliced banana on top, if I'm tired of cheese toast.
ReplyDeleteEggs, cheese grits, French toast, and all other slightly more complex breakfasts have to wait until days off when I have more time. In fact, my version of a full English breakfast (let's call it a Full Southern!) would be: real grits, the kind that take a long time to cook, with butter and grated cheddar mixed in....two eggs over easy...crispy bacon or spicy link sausage....and whole wheat/whole grain toast with plenty of butter and jam on the side. Oh, and in the summer, add in fresh homegrown tomato slices! Tomatoes and eggs go together really well!
Mmmm...Your Southern breakfast sounds scrumptious Jennifer but I am not too keen on the idea of cheese at breakfast time.

Why do the French have to make a meal of breakfast?
DeleteThey only had coffee and croissant by tradition but times change and tourists want fed at cafes in the morning.
DeleteI used to stay with friends in Brittany and the maid would bring me a bowl of coffee and a square of bitter chocolate.
That maid haunted me, I would have married her, but she scooted home to Mama after she had prepared Dejeuner.
I never liked career women, too much like men, I only liked women who worked as domestics or in bakeries or laundries.
They are much better company and don't talk too much, and this maid could cook like Escoffier.
It's like the first Godfather movie, if the simple Sicilian girl had not been blown up, Michael's life would have been happy, because she would have borne him children, and never interfered in men's business.
OJ, my mocha and then usually a bagel with cream cheese or a wheat muffin with peanut butter. I love eggs and waffles but only have them when I go out for breakfast.

DeleteWith that amount of choice I'd be tormented by indecision every morning. Apart from occasional porridge I've had Shredded Wheat every day for 50 years, although the last couple of weeks with a reaction to Ibuprofen I've only been able to face Malties.

DeleteJennifer's comment made me laugh- I am so much the same! I'd say that at least 75% of my breakfasts consist of a cheese toast but I do put sliced tomatoes on top. Our Sunday morning breakfasts are more substantial. If there are grandchildren here, there will be pancakes, bacon or sausage, and scrambled eggs. If it's just the two of us, biscuits, eggs, grits or potatoes with bacon or sausage. And Jennifer is so right about the tomatoes!

ReplyDeleteIf I decide to eat, sourdough with ricotta and honey is a current fave. Other options are Papaya and coconut yoghurt, barley cooked in Apple juice, scrambled eggs on toast...
I like variety

DeleteMy breakfast is porridge everyday, mostly plain, but with added finely chopped dried fruit now and again. Less often than in the past with prices rising as they always do. Water to drink.

ReplyDeleteMy workday breafkast is muesli with a sliced banana, a handful of blueberries or other fruit. Coffee is had well before that, usually straight after getting up; I can't eat straight away and so that muesli usually happens about 1 1/2 hours after the coffee.
On weekends with OK, we love sumptuous breakfasts with either scrambled eggs or sunny side up on toast, sometimes fried bacon. More often, it is fresh rolls delivered from the bakery service, and for drinks: A mug of coffee while we're still in bed, and an hour or two later with the actual breakfast, Earl Grey, a glass of orange or tomato juice and, if we feel like it, a glass or two of sparkling wine.
What I love particularly but only have on rare occasions is filet of trout and horseradish cream.
I don't get this! You have a coffee sixty to ninety minutes before you have breakfast? I speak as someone who could shower, eat and drink, get dressed and grab the car keys in eleven minutes before heading off to work!
DeleteYes, I have coffee and then do everything else - my exercises, shower, get dressed and only then do I eat. If I have to be somewhere early, I can be ready to leave the house in 20 minutes, but that does not include eating. And I much prefer a quieter, less hectic start to the day.
DeleteI have four varieties of cereal and I only have a small amount, a times topped with some fruit and always sprinkled with psyllium husks to keep my cholesterol levels low and with a side bonus being it helps your 'regularity' and 'formations'.

DeleteMy most common breakfast is mini choc chip Weetabix with chopped banana plum and grapes and topped with Greek yoghurt (never any milk as I prefer to crunch my breakfast than have it soggy). Occasionally for a change I will have toast with honey or peanut butter and sometimes porridge.
ReplyDeleteWeetabix really do soak up warm milk. I imagine that one normal-sized Weetabix could soak up a gallon of warm milk. Maybe more.
DeleteI don't eat cereals so, one day most weeks I'll have scrambled eggs on wholemeal or whole grain toast. Croissant with butter and jam is a Saturday treat when I meet up with a friend for breakfast - or we'll have toasted baguette with tomato - a very typical Spanish breakfast. Most days of the week I'll have two slices of Brioche loaf with a skim of unsalted butter. The occasional bacon sandwich, or mushrooms and tomato on toast. A full breakfast usually when staying in a hotel. Whatever I choose it's always accompanied by a mug of strong black coffee (Americano) usually the only cup I have each day.
