In the world of entertainment as in the world of politics, most lead actors require sidekicks to support and embolden them. When you think of sidekicks who springs to your mind? These were the first five that I thought about:-
Benny from "Top Cat"
Robin from "Batman"
Boo Boo from "Yogi Bear"
Those last two!!! Yes.
ReplyDeleteBut I also thought of Barney Rubble from The Flintstones and Fred and Ethel from I Love Lucy.
Well - I don't know much about "I Love Lucy" but Barney Rubble was a true champion of American blue collar workers in spite of his diminutive size.

Sideshow Bob, who is Krusty the Clown's sidekick in The Simpsons.
ReplyDeleteWell - I never knew you were a fan!
DeleteI'm not; I used to watch it for a while in the 1990s but have not done so in a long time.
DeleteBullwinkle J. Moose from the show "Rocky and his friends".
ReplyDeleteI had not thought of that moose, nor Rocky in many years.
DeleteYorkshire Pudding and Gravy?
ReplyDeleteBest partners ever - like The Lone Ranger and Tonto.
DeleteThe Russians would vote for him!
ReplyDeleteWho? Benny the Ball?
DeleteEd Norton to Ralph Kramden.
ReplyDeleteUnknown to me I'm afraid.
DeleteCop shows relied on the sidekick, an unfortunate term for a trusted colleague:
ReplyDeleteSherlock Holmes and Dr Watson; Starsky and Hutch; Inspector Morse and Lewis.
Everything about Morse was enthralling: the theme music (YouTube), the Oxford setting and the great late John Thaw, at once ordinary and enigmatic.
Ed McBain created a string of witty cop partnerships, all with their own back stories and home lives: wives, girlfriends, dreams, fears, phobias, favourite songs, jokes.

I am so tired of TV shows that involve cops and detective work. By the way I was at university with Stewart Hepburn who wrote many scripts for "Taggart".
DeleteErnie Wise. Ronnie Corbett.
ReplyDeleteGood 'uns!
DeleteI'll go with Ed McMahon/Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. Or... Officer Bill Gannon/Sgt. Joe Friday on Dragnet.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of "Dragnet" Kelly. Did I miss anything of note?

*Martin & Lewis - What Would I Do Without You?*
ReplyDeleteYouTube.
One of the most successful double acts on television and Vegas.
Dean Martin was the model for the Italian singer Nino in the novel The Godfather.
At a Hollywood private movie screening Nino has a romantic moment with a libidinous actress (based on Barbara Stanwyck) and treats her with cool disdain afterwards.
Jerry Lewis was formidable as the Johnny Carson-type talk show host in the real-life movie, King of Comedy. He gets abducted by a crazy lady fan.
*Jerry Lewis on religion and family.*
YouTube.
One of the most searching + intelligent interviews Lewis ever gave.
Dino was never the same after the death of his son, an American Airforce pilot.
There was a sadness that never left him.

This blogpost has certainly sparked the sleeping Haggerty cranium.
DeleteHow about Eleonor Roosevelt?
ReplyDeleteJean Kline plays a similar role.
Delete"I'm a Potato" is a song?
ReplyDeleteJerry from Tom & Jerry
Jerry Lewis from Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis, I think it was The Dean Martin Show or several movies at least.
Lamb Chop as sidekick for Shari Lewis
Barney Rubble as sidekick for Fred Flintstone
No. I made up that song title. Come to think of it, I would love to see that fellow mashed.
DeleteLukashenka makes a pretty unappetizing potato. At best, he deserves his own fly.
ReplyDeleteMinute Mouse.
