Moana

This afternoon, Shirley and I took Little Phoebe to the Odeon Luxe cinema in the centre of the city. We were there to attend the 12pm screening of "Moana 2". This popular animated film has just about reached the end of its tether on the cinema circuit and that's the main reason why today's audience comprised of just the three of us. We had the best seats in the very centre of the auditorium.

The sound system was so thunderous that Phoebe covered up her ears during the ad and preview section. She doesn't like loud noise and at just four years and one day old, she does not fake this distaste. Shirley asked the cinema staff to turn it down a notch or two and they kindly complied.

If as an adult you do not have much contact with small children, you are probably mystified by the very mention of Moana. She is a Disney figure who starred in the first film that bears her name in 2016. We watched that one down at Ian's house in Fulham, London at Christmastime 2022. It was spectacular and yet very human too. I loved the way that references to genuine Polynesian life and history had been woven in to the fabric of the film. We all enjoyed it.

Moana lives on the fictional Pacific island of Motunui. She is the daughter of Tui, the island's chief. Ultimately it falls upon her to fight for the island's future  in a battle between the ancient forces of good and evil. It's roughly the same theme in "Moana 2". Of course it is of some socio-cultural significance that Moana is female and pretty tough.

In both films we meet the huge shape-shifting tattooed figure of the demigod Maui whose streetwise voice is that of Dwayne Johnson. He befriends Moana and acts as her champion.

"Moana" and "Moana 2" are visual masterpieces that demonstrate how far Disney animation has come. Both films contain strong musical elements and songs. It is easy to lose yourself in them - especially on a big screen.

As Christmas had just passed by, we were a little stuck when thinking about gifts to buy Phoebe. You might be interested to learn that all four gifts  were "Moana 2" branded - a jigsaw, a singalong microphone, a Moana doll and Moana 2 shower gel. I am not proud to admit this but that's how it was.

When we emerged from the dark cinema, Sheffield was bathed in golden light - the glare so sharp that you had to shield your eyes. Phoebe refused to put her coat on because, bizarrely, after the recent wintry weather, it was now as if summer had arrived early. Perhaps Moana and Maui the demigod had had a hand in that.

  1. I enjoyed the first Moana movie. I think I may have even watched it twice. I look forward to seeing the sequel when it streams on Disney+. However, so far I have not purchased any Moana shower gel . . . .

    1. You need it to keep clean Debra - unless of course you use Lion King shower gel.

  2. You've made me realise why I'm so happy not having very young granddaughters.

    1. You would probably have enjoyed "Moana 2" as well.

  3. You are right in assuming that some of us who, like me, are not regularly in close contatct with small children, aren't familiar with Moana.
But I like what you say about the films, and your Moana-themed birthday presents sound good to me - I am sure Phoebe liked them, too! By the way, belated happy fourth birthday to your lovely granddaughter!

    1. The way that Disney teams work together to bring these things together is really rather brilliant.

  4. I haven't yet seen Moana 2 but I loved the first one very much. I think your birthday gifts for Phoebe were inspired, nothing to be ashamed of there.

    1. If you liked "Moana" you will also like "Moana 2"... but there are strong similarities. I wonder if there'll be a "Moana 3". "Moaner" could be a porn film!

  5. As I saw the title of the post, I thought of a New Zealand connection, but I wasn't quite right about that. It's interesting that adults find the animation entertaining, as I have with some I've seen.

    1. The makers are clever about inserting elements that will appeal to adults.

  6. Phoebe's birthday presents sound ideal for a four year old. I expect she was delighted with them.

    1. Well she was. She had so many... and just after Christmas too.

  7. All I know from my New Zealand life is that 'moana' is Maori (and presumably Polynesian) for 'ocean'.

Your comment on the Christmas present is revealing. My grandson's birthday is on 23 December. Trying to buy a single present is nigh on impossible and two is dire. He needs nothing. He has so much that he even finds it hard to want anything so long as he has a current film figure (in miniature of course) in one hand and his tablet computer in the other. He's appears as happy as he's likely to be. To be frank I think the possessions some children have these days is obscene. Especially when most of the world's children have half of nothing.

    1. Good point. Next year may I suggest a voodoo doll with hat pins for your grandson... depicting his paternal grandfather!

  9. Belated Happy Birthday to Phoebe, pleased to hear she had some nice presents and enjoyed the film. Not one I've heard if before, but then I don't often come into contact with young children these days.

  10. I haven't watched any Disney or Pixar films recently. I miss having an excuse to lose myself in them, though I could always watch them on my own. Lucky Phoebe - I'm sure she was delighted with her birthday gifts. I've just realised, with some shock, that my second great-granddaughter will be four in March!

  11. I'm aware of Moana but I've never seen any of the movies. Must have been interesting for you, given your experiences in the South Pacific many years ago.

  12. I've seen the first movie, not the second. Disney has come a long way from Snow White. My grandkids love Moana. When Phoebe is a little older, you should watch Coco with her. That is a very, very good one. You will probably cry.

  14. Disney and Pixar have some very good children's movies and we watch a lot of them. My favorite is probably "Luca" but Jack loves "Inside Out" 1 and 2.

  15. We do a pizza and a movie night with 2 of my grandsons about once a month - just watching movies on TV. We've seen the first Moana so I will have to watch for this one.

  16. My lovely grandson turns 17 this month and driving lessons are on the horizon. Ouch!
