Remembrance

The numbers are disputed but it is generally thought that 37 million people
died in World War I and 60 million died in World War II.

At 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month...

"At the going down of the sun and in the
morning - we will remember them..."

  1. I shall never forget. I always think of my two granddads on opposite sides in WW1 as well as my mum is the Women's Land Army. I cam across an amazing poem written by a 14-year-old recently. I attach a link https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-hereford-worcester-50291048/leominster-schoolboy-s-remembrance-poem-praised

  2. I just wish with all my heart that we could learn from the 100 million who died in wars all over the globe in the 20th Century.

      When will they ever learn?
      When will they ever learn?

    1. I wonder how these young men would have felt if they had foreseen that they would be so fondly remembered a hundred years after their cruel passing.

  4. They would still have preferred a life rather than become a memory, I would think.

  5. As you have Remembrance Day today is our Veterans Day. My father and all of my uncles fought in World War II. I have one uncle who's plane was shot down over the English Channel. The plane and the men on it were never found.

  6. So many lives lost, so many families in tatters. Such a waste of life and loss of happiness in the world. I am thankful for those who fought back against evil. Imagine what the world would be like today if they had not.

  7. It is one day I always revere...and I always buy a couple of poppies from the RSL stall (Returned and Services League). From as far back as I can remember...from when I was a small child...I've always observed a minute's silence on the 11th hour of the llth day of the 11th month.

It's a day I always remember for another reason, too...because I was born five or so minutes after the 11th hour of the 11th month...

  8. My father fought in WW11, it's how my parents met. I don't know what he was like before the war but he was an angry, depressed man for the rest of his life after the war. The war killed something in him and I'm sure it did that to a lot of men who came back from the war with no visible injuries. And we continue to send people to war to kill others. The taking of another soul is something you have to carry with you for the rest of your life and I'm not sure politicians understand this as they send young people off to fight their battles. I'm not saying there aren't battles worth fighting but there are long term consequences which don't seem to be addressed.

At eleven this morning the bagpipes played on CBC radio and I thought of my dad and cried.

    2. We are united both in honour of those who fought and died for our freedom and in protest about the futlity of war... Lilycedar -you make a very good point about those who were invisibly damaged by war - even though at one level they appeared to function quite normally when back on civvy street.
