Surreal

"The Mail on Sunday" is not a newspaper we would ever normally purchase but we bought a copy yesterday at the behest of our son Ian. I headed straight for the "You" magazine within. Flicking through the pages, I soon found "The Mighty Bosh!" article and chuckled away as I read it. It is for example funny to see one's son described as a "hipster".

It was a long, positive article by a journalist called Judith Woods and there were also a couple of recipes from the forthcoming "Bosh!" Cookbook.

Now this is where the surreal bit comes in. As I was reading the article, I was called into our dining room by Lady P. She had the radio on and was listening to the Michael Ball Show on Radio 2. "Ian's on the radio!" she yelled.
I put down the article I had been reading about "Bosh!" to listen to Ian and his "Bosh!" colleague (American: co-worker) being interviewed at some length by Michael Ball who is a well-known English singer, recording artiste and entertainer. Ball was also a good interviewer. He showed genuine interest in veganism and his questions were open and encouraging.

Ian and Henry are getting better at dealing with this kind of situation. Shirley and I were a little taken aback when Ball asked them what they hoped the next step might be and Henry replied, "A TV show". But who knows? Perhaps it will happen. Meat and dairy-free diets are very current. People are interested. During the interview, Henry said, "Even Ian's dad is flexitarian now".

Anyway, I returned to the magazine article, resisting any temptation to turn on the television  set - just in case our son's face appeared there to give me a surreality overdose.

I hope the book has a wild success

  2. The boys are very smart in always appearing in color-coordinated clothes. It makes their personalities stand out more than if they were in something distracting.

OF COURSE they will be on TV! And it's good that they talk about it, put it "out there" so that The Powers That Be will know that they are ready to take their business to the next level, and the next, and the next.

  3. You're right that the time is ripe for Bosh! It's remarkable how many people are interested now in flexitarian/vegan/gluten-free/lactose-free diets. Dave has watched some of the Bosh! videos, and also some by an Irish duo who are very similar. (I forget their names but you may know.) We love that Bosh! enthusiasm!

On a purely linguistic note, Americans use the word "colleague" too. I would argue, though, that a colleague is not the same as a co-worker. A colleague is someone who you like/work/collaborate with. It implies a sort of working closeness or at least collegiality. A co-worker can be (but doesn't HAVE to be) a step removed from that -- someone with whom you merely work.

    1. With my tail between my legs but with scowling reluctance, I accept your well-considered point about co-workers and colleagues. I'll have to stick to "sidewalk" in future.

    2. The term "co-worker" was never used in English parlance until this decade. It is an American import. Having thought about it, I do not agree with your distinction Steve. I spent all my working life referring to "colleagues" - often they certainly were just people with whom I worked.

  4. I saw them in Milan... no, I mean, I saw them in the "stories & news" section of their Bosh website of when they were in Milan for their book. I like their charisma - they will go very far!
    Greetings Maria x

  7. I can't wait to get the cookbook. Amazon says it will be at my front door on May 1. (Which is the day we will be putting our mountaintop and home up for sale! I will be reading their book through my tears, I'm afraid.)

I have tried a few of the recipes already from the FB page and wonder if they are that great at putting tastes together to make a lovely dish or if they have the expert advice of nutritionists, chiefs, organic gardeners, etc.

    1. What? You are selling your lovely house? I can hardly believe it. Where are you going and why?

Thank you for your Bosh! support and thank you for your tip about payne's grey - I am working on it.

    2. We are selling out and moving down the slope. Not willingly, of course. But then we are not willingly in our 70's either! These acres at the top of this mountain need younger people to keep it up and hopefully we will be able to find those people.

    1. I could get Ian and Henry to sign a sticker that you could then stick in the book. I know it's not quite the same but it is a good reserve option.

  9. How exciting! You and Mrs.P must be very proud of Ian! The boys seem wise at promoting their book and I have no doubt they will end up with a TV program and more books. Their book looks very interesting and I would like to try some of their recipes. I have ordered a copy of the book and may get a second one as a gift for my vegetarian granddaughter. I know she would love it! I am not vegetarian but I am most definitely "flexitarian" as you put it and I love that term!

  12. It's wonderful to see this unfold for your son and to see hard work rewarded! And the time is ripe for this eating approach, so I suspect their success will be long-lived. Surreal is a good way to describe how it must feel, though!
