People

Last night I went for a ramble courtesy of Google Streetview. I was looking for people out and about in the world's streets. Many of the places I searched were like ghost towns. However, in the infamous North Welsh village of Trelawyd, there was just this woman trudging along the pavement by London Road, exhausted after yet another long session cleaning the little cottage by the church...

In exclusive Tamborine Mountain, Queensland, Australia, this little girl came skipping out to buy an ice cream but it was only The Google Streetview Car. No ice cream cornets little girl. Best to dash back inside and play with your yo-yo...

On a corner in Red Deer, Canada two young people were passing the time of day but there was nobody else around. Not even Red from "Hiawatha House":-

In Bellerby, North Yorkshire this well-dressed fellow with a strangely blurred face looked as if he was going off to work -  in a hotel perhaps. I hope he looks left and right or he might be flattened by the Google vehicle.

In Canton, Georgia I searched everywhere for blogging stalwart Bob Brague but he was nowhere to be found. Of course, I checked every bar in the place. However, there were a couple of people in the town's bandstand including the fellow in the white T-shirt who yelled at the passing photo-shooting car to "get the hell outta town!"

Ludwigsburg, Germany boasts some fine Baroque architecture and as you can see one of the town's main squares is bursting with Baroque enthusiasts:-

Next I went to Stornoway on The Isle of Lewis where two people were approaching The Clydesdale Bank which kindly looks after the vast fortunes of The Laird of Eagleton. An earlier visit to Eagleton itself was fruitless. There was nobody to be seen...

Finally I arrived at Kell's Cafe in Hinckley, Leicestershire. Two thuggish young men fired insults at the Streetview car's driver, questioning his sexual orienation and the legitimacy of his birth. The driver bravely asked if they knew Terry Stynes - Hinckley's most famous celebrity - but surprisingly they said they had never heard of him:-

Yes. Not many people out and about in Googleworld.

I was inspired to create this admittedly strange post by "Travelogue of an Armchair Traveller", which is managed by a very clever and inquisitive gentleman who resides in Lucknow, India.

    1. The BBC news presenter Martine Croxall was born in Hinckley but she is not as famous as you.

    4. THAT Martine. The one that was a lesbian when I met her?

    5. Yes her. She called the baby Terence.

    1. All you have to do is use the snipping tool to get your Streetview pictures. Thanks for calling by Uncle Reamus.

    1. I wonder where you live ADDY. I might look around and find you on Streetview - hopefully sunbathing in your bikini in the back garden.

    3. Okay then - swimming in your flooded garden.

Sorry I have removed my previous comment. It's a wonderful idea to "visit" places of your followers and imagine a story around it. It has given me a story for my own blog, but sad, most of the places I would love to visit this way are villages too tiny, google didn't offer streetview there. And no, I'm not talking about the South Pacific ;-)

    1. I wonder what you said in the comment you deleted Kaki. I hope it wasn't too rude! Maybe that's why you deleted it.

Oh sorry, don't worry, I would never be rude my friend. I just hadn't finished my comment but published it by mistake.

    1. I surmise that your late mother would often instruct you to stop playing with your yo-yo and you are still playing with it today!

    1. No I haven't Kylie but a few years ago the Streetview cameras caught a boy wearing a horse's head in the suburbs of Aberdeen, Scotland. It became newsworthy for a little while.

  7. Not only is Red not in the picture, he doesn't recognize the street corner. At my place my wife is walking across the yard.

    1. Yup! That corner is in downtown Red Deer. Jut look around Streetview and you'll find it.

    2. Street view is too slow. I'll have to believe you that it's there!

  9. Hardly surprising that there was no one around in Eagleton. I did see someone walking a dog on one occasion but she was from the next township. You could have shown a nicer view of the fair town of Stornoway though surely. Great idea for a post though I have to say.

  10. Just for the record: the picture of Ludwigsburg does not show one of the main squares, but one of the three courtyards of the palace.

    1. To tell you the truth, Google Streetview didn't appear to cover Ludwigsburg so I had to take that picture from a 360 degree picture that is included in Google mapping.

  11. What, no suspicious looking bearded bloke in his mud spattered jim-jams, with a gaggle of terriers and one gorgeous bull dog in Trelawynd? Is that Auntie Glad, YP?

  12. You were lucky you didn't see me out on my lane-way Tuesday around noon yelling out at the Energex guys (power suppliers) who had been up and down the side of the road lopping back tree limbs/branches. During their willy-nilly lopping (I thought I was back in the days of King Arthur and catapults were being used to fire rocks at my cabin!) - the careless clowns cut my phone line!!!

So for 24 hours or so I was without phone and internet until a Telstra tech came to re-attached the phone line. I was not amused! I don't have a mobile phone, so am dependent on my landline.

    1. Willy-nilly lopping sounds painful. Also I thought that Energex was a performance enhancing drug for dodgy Olympic athletes.

At least you only had to wait 24 hours to get things sorted.

  14. Before we went on our trip to South Africa, I took a virtual stroll about the streets near where we were staying. It was eerie to arrive there and recognise houses and sights that I had never visited before.

And the Travelogue of an Armchair Traveller is a fascinating idea.

    1. I often use Streetview to check out driving routes. I find it helpful to see tricky junctions in advance - safer than a satnav.

  15. I used google Earth to check out our street and found it completely devoid of humans too ! I love Google earth and use it often when planning overseas trips so I can get a look at an area where we plan to stay or scope out a driving route. This year I have come up against what must be Austrian/German privacy laws though and find I cant view many streets in these countries.

    1. I found the same when visiting Ludwigsburg, Germany via Google mapping. Streetview was unavailable. But in Australia and England we have nothing to hide.
