Canada

Granddaughter Phoebe is nine months old today. There she is on the lakeside decking of the cabin she is currently staying in in the Algonquin Provincial Park in northern Ontario, Canada. It covers a lot of land - three thousand square miles and boasts over 2,400 lakes. The English Lake District is slightly smaller and contains fewer lakes - in fact there are only sixteen!

On Wednesday, Phoebe and her parents travelled to the place where Lake Erie drains into Lake Ontario. I am sure you can guess where they were. See below. I don't know if they rode on "The Maid of the Mist" - right up to the base of the falls. That's a thrilling experience for certain but I am not sure if the operators  allow nine month old babies on board.

And here the little family is/are  at the top of The CN Tower in Toronto. Phoebe doesn't look too happy does she?

  1. She looks pretty happy in that middle photo. Perhaps she is looking for her grandpa?

    1. Grandpa is missing that little girl. So is grandma or as I call her - "Nana".

Seeing and sailing up to the falls after flying over them in a helicopter is one of my best travel moments.

    1. That's nothing. One of the best travel moments of my life was visiting The Sea of Tranquillity on The Moon.

I think I saw that on the Blackpool Pier.

  3. Oh sweet! Algonquin Park is literally just out my back door. Lovely and warm here right now but a change is on the doorstep.

  4. The off season for tourists is a little bitter sweet. There aren't the crowds of people , but some attractions are closed and you could get some nasty weather. However, they're in the right country!

    1. I suggested that they drive over to Red Deer to see a certain retired teacher but they felt it was a little too far.

    2. Aw come on guys. It's only about 4 or 5 thousand KM.

  5. It's rather a shock to see how serious Phoebe can be! We have been treated to so many smiley pictures it's hard to remember she would have any other expression :)

When she returns, make sure you check to see if she has added "eh?" to her vocabulary, eh?

  6. Phoebe is always impeccably dressed, as befits a princess on a state visit!
Nine months old - that means she has now been "out" in the world for as long as she'd been growing inside her mother.
    2,400 lakes is mind-boggling!

  8. Phoebe looks a charming as ever. Seems to be enjoying her Canada sojourn (well, maybe not the tall building).

Good ole Niagara Falls (Canadian side has the best views). Been on Maid of the Mist--even with the jackets they give you to wear, you do get a bit wet, but a fun experience. There are also some cave like access points beside the falls that put you right next to and below the falling water. Loud! A wonderful viewpoint; it truly gives you a sense of the power of the water.

  10. She looks a very serious little girl in the first photo, possibly contemplating the speed with which her first year is passing by?
She does look unhappy but perhaps the lift (elevator) trip unnerved her, they whisk you up at such a speed, and she felt out of her comfort zone?
It's sad that she won't remember the trip, and all the new adventures she's experienced, but will have to rely on the photos and stories told to her later.

  11. Ah yes, I recognize the falls! When we were there we had two dogs with us and thus couldn't take the boat trip. But I was happy enough with seeing them from land!

    1. "The Maid of the Mist" is great fun. It's amazing they can take the boat so close to all that frothing water.

  12. Why did they travel so far with a baby? Just curious. I spent an hour and a half on a plane with a 2 1/2 year old last night and did not enjoy it. He wasn't keen on having to sit in his seat with the seatbelt on. There was crying and yelling but I kept calm, although I did sweat a bit:) I think we'll hold off any travel until he's much older.

Ontario is so beautiful this time of year.

  14. What a beautiful place to raise a family. 'Almost as lovely as Yorkshire', I hear you say! I'm not sure how I'd feel if my children travelled that far; bereft no doubt, and yet they must live their own lives...

  16. We did the Maid Of the Mist thing once several years back and while I guess I enjoyed it, I have no desire to ever do so again. It was just too touristy for my liking.
