Some "Yorkshire Pudding" visitors know about my son's vegan journey. You have followed his progress with his "Bosh!" teammate Henry. Together they have come a long way. Three books in the bag, a prestigious "book of the year" award from Britain's booksellers, TV appearances, magazine articles and so on. They have been riding a vegan wave and now there's a new and very exciting development...
The likely title of the TV show will be "Living on the Veg". Ian and Henry are busily filming ten episodes which will be screened on ITV on Sunday mornings quite early in the new year. Recipes will be demonstrated and there will be weekly celebrity guests.
Bringing vegan cookery to mainstream TV is quite amazing - almost incredible. Not so long ago vegans were seen as weirdo cranks who lived on lentil soup and wholemeal bread. Now it is becoming cool to be vegan. As Ian and Henry announce news of their breakthrough TV series. the BBC will be showing a documentary on Monday night entitled "Meat: A Threat To Our Planet".
Ahhh...the boys are doing so well...going ahead in leaps and bounds!
ReplyDeleteEven "poor Lee" has heard of their good work...and their books...not only from your writing about them here in your blog...but from a review I read in our own "Courier Mail", a few months ago....as I mentioned to you at the time.
Again, and still...I wish Ian and Henry well. I hope many folk put the new book on order as a late Christmas present to their loved ones...and to themselves. Good luck, lads!

ReplyDeleteYou can have a meat-free sausage or two Linda Sue! In British supermarkets you usually see "Linda McCartney" vegan sausages for sale in the freezer section. They are actually pretty good.

DeleteWell done to the boys. It's interesting that the rise in vegan popularity is exactly the same as vegetarianism years ago. I remember when that suddenly became the "in" or "cool" thing after always being considered cranky!
ReplyDeleteYet in spite of the undoubted popularity of both forms of a meat free diet, there are still many meat eaters out there !
I am a meat eater CG but occasionally I have vegan or vegetarian meals. If more of us did that it would still have a significant impact on the planet.
DeleteStrangely, no one has mentioned fish - this is also a no-no to both forms of diet. My grandmother (a farmer's daughter) always quoted the old adage "Eat neither fish nor fowl, nor good red meat" when describing a vegetarian.
DeleteHaving been a vegetarian on and off for most of my life I've never embraced veganism as a way of life however I've eaten 'vegan' food long before it even had that name. May they and their books live long and prosper.

DeleteI think, YP, the point is that veganism is a way of life more than just a food choice: no animal products of any sort shall be used in any way including animal milk and wool and, presumably, silk. It is a question, originally, of exploitation and cruelty to animals.
DeleteClothing that contains polyester is not easily and in some cases not at all recyclable so that leaves principally cotton and jute. It comes down to a rock and a hard place in many situations. However eating vegan food is, generally, far more environmentally friendly than eating meat.
I contend, and my son would agree, that it is impossible to be 100% vegan. There are degrees of veganism.
DeleteWe're veggies - well Mrs D. has been since about the age of 10 and imposes veggietyranny but that being said I've never liked meat or the associated farming and processing issues and rarely ate it before. Now we're becoming more aware of the environmental issues it would be good to become more vegan. Will look out for the prog. Ian and Henry's success is absolutely brilliant and you must be so pleased and proud. Ian will be able to pay for a top of the range care home for you. Wasn't Mr. Spock in Star Trek a vegan? Hope they don't grow pointy ears.
ReplyDeleteMr Spock was a Vulcan!...Perhaps you can buy "Bosh!" or "Bish! Bash! Bosh!" for your Elsie's Christmas stocking. It will make a change from the usual orange and walnut whip.

ReplyDeleteAlthough I shall never give up meat entirely, I have cut down my consumption drastically. I still need to support the local farming economy so will continue to have the occasional Manx fillet steak or pork loin to keep our farmers going. In the meantime, I shall look to the boys' recommendations for more healthy options.
Cold, dead animal flesh is so appealing isn't it JayCee? If more of us cut down, that would help the planet a lot. You don't have to go entirely vegan or vegetarian.

DeleteCongratulations to Ian and Henry on their huge breakthrough ! Hope we will get to see them here in NZ. I'll be borrowing from their Christmas menu this year to jazz up the carrots and beetroot. Over the last 20 years we have moved from meat at every main meal to meat only 2 or 3 times a week. I could happily do without meat but could not imagine life without eggs or cheese. As a cook I get far more excited by the fresh fruit and vegetables on offer at the market or what's growing in our garden than by those lumps of cold flesh in the meat aisle cabinets. When the cattle happily grazing in the paddock next door to us disappear we know what their fate is....

In Britain, they are the very first vegans to earn themselves a TV show. That speaks volumes Jenny.
