24 May 2015

24th

The 24th of May. It was my mother's birthday. She would have been ninety four today. And back in 2008 it was the day on which Shirley's mother, Winnie, died. That very day Hull City made it to The Premier League for the first time - beating Bristol City in The Championship play-off final at Wembley. The 24th of May 1959 was the day that Shirley was christened. In the past, and this was something my mother was quite proud of, May 24th was celebrated throughout the British Empire for it was Empire Day - a public holiday and a day for parties. Mum said that it was on one particular Empire Day that she saw and tasted an orange for the very first time.

Back in 1819 on May 24th, Queen Victoria was born and later today - May 24th - ny team - Hull City will learn their fate for next season as they take on Manchester United in their last fixture of the season while Newcastle United take on West Ham. It is us or them but the odds are on The Tigers to go down. Boo hoo! Only a year ago we were in our first F.A. Cup Final.

Apart from the usual significant days, do you have any other special dates when things just seem to happen?

  1. Your family was on a roll for the 24 th of May. We used to celebrate May 24 and the Queen's birthday. Now we just call it May long weekend and it's the third weekend of the month.

    1. Yes. I saw on Wikipedia that Canada has partly hung on to Empire Day.

  2. Not dates, but the number 13 was significant for my maternal grandmother. Among many more such coincidences, she lived in No. 13 all her married life, and when she died, place No. 13 was assigned to hold her urn in the columbarium. Her husband was born in 1913. I can't think of the other "thirteens" in her life now, but she and later my Mum have frequently talked about it.
Tomorrow (May 25th) would be my granddad's 100th birthday.

    1. I had to look up the word "columbarium". You have taught me something today! In England we mostly scatter the ashes of the deceased - often in places that were special to our departed loved ones.

  3. No I don't have significant days.
I wish Hull luck and if they win then I hope they all get a line of cocaine.

  4. There are several days in late December (right around Christmas) that terrible things have happened in my life. I dread December every single year. The 19th, 25th, and 28th especially.

    1. Of course so many people look forward to that period of the year Jennifer. I hope you make it through December 2015 unscathed.

  5. My mother's birthday was the 17th February, and if she was still alive she would've turned 96 this year.

Events special or otherwise just seem to randomly happen with me.

My birth date is 11th November...aka Armistice Day - and yes, I still refer to it as Armistice Day (and my birthday)!

  6. I am surprised that your parents didn't name you Armistice or maybe Dove of Peace. Both would have been catchy names to make you stand out from the crowd.

  7. In my paternal family, several were born on March 20. Another significant date is June 28. Some were born on that date, but even more have died on it. Every year I live past June 28, I figure I'm good for at least one more.

  8. I had decided that I was not going to comment on this. I think I lacked the courage. Anyway it was still here today so I decided to change my mind. I was two days before D-Day on 4 June 1944. People constantly reminded me of that at one time but few remember the date of D-Day these days. The date took on a new significance though because our elder son died on that day. The following year another friend died on the same day. Then two years ago our younger son decided to change it and got engaged on that day. I don't celebrate my birthday - no reason I just don't - but I never forget it.
