Weather

One of the things I still love about living in England is the unpredictability of our weather. You just never know what you are going to get. We enjoy a temperate maritime climate - greatly influenced by the moods of The Atlantic Ocean and the fickleness of the North Atlantic jet stream.

Last year at this time we were enjoying honeyed summer warmth. I went up to Leeds to watch England beat Costa Rica in a World Cup "warm up" match. But the fans had no need to warm up. We were in T-shirts waving the red and white flags of our country.

Today, I can hear a wind from the north buffeting our chimney pots. There has been so much rain that I cannot get out in the garden to do some desperately needed tidying up before our holiday and there's a leak in the kitchen...what am I gonna do? It's also pretty cold for June.

Anybody who arranged weddings for last weekend will have been sorely disappointed by the weather which will have surely put a dampener on things. The weekend ahead doesn't look much better. I guess this is a great time to jet away to Santorini sunshine with its more predictable June weather - sunshine every day with 29 degrees centigrade expected for the next two weeks. I must remember my hat and sunglasses.

On days like today, it would be quite easy to side with climate change deniers. In fact today's evidence suggests that we are experiencing global cooling and if Noah is still at his boatyard he should probably get that ark finished tout suite.

  1. It's alright for you fairweather walkers, I've got to take a dog for a walk in this rain.

  2. We've had quite a bit of rain in the last week, and the temperature is down to more seasonal averages after the heat wave at the end of May. I sure have enjoyed the respite! And we needed the rain.

Are you getting excited about your trip? It sounds great!

    1. Excited? No. But I am looking forward to swimming in the Mediterranean again. Shirley has just got the suitcases down from the attic.

  3. I vividly remember 19th June 1976 as that was my wedding day. It had been cool and wet all month and poured down that day. A couple of days later we were in a heatwave which led to drought conditions and the widespread use of standpipes. Our weather is still crazy.

    1. It's like Forrest Gump weather, "British weather is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're gonna git." May I be the first to wish you a happy 43rd anniversary on the 19th.

  4. We had a lot of rain yesterday but today is glorious sunshine. We seem to be in a bubble here protected by the South Downs to some extent. I tend not to take any notice of the weather reports these days. Enjoy your hols.

  5. After a very warm (some would say hot) week last week, with temperatures reaching 33-34 Celsius during the day and no lower than 27 at night, we've been having a rather drastic drop in temperature yesterday and today. But I am glad about the rain; last year's many months of drought were worrying.
Enjoy your holiday on Santorini! Maybe there will even be a "live" post or two while you're there?

  6. We're having chilly, wet weather here too. If that map is any indication, I guess almost everyone in England is!

  7. Well after this morning's downpour I went for my walk in the woods in full wet-weather gear. I didn't get rained upon but I was very grateful for the protection my clothing afforded from the strong and bitter northerly wind - IN JUNE!

  9. As one superstition claims...rain on one's wedding day is an omen of future good luck in the marriage.

I feel lucky every time it rains...day or night. I never complain about rain...I love the sound of rain on the roof.

If I had a spare wedding dress laying around I'd don it each time it rain to see if good fortune comes my way. I could become the modern-day "Mrs. Havisham"!! Great expectations have I!

    1. The point is that she was Miss Havisham and not Mrs. This description by Dickens suggests that he might have imagined the current tenant of your cabin: 'She was dressed in rich materials - satins, and lace, and silks - all of white. Her shoes were white. And she had a long white veil dependent from her hair, and she had bridal flowers in her hair, but her hair was white. Some bright jewels sparkled on her neck and on her hands, and some other jewels lay sparkling on the table. Dresses, less splendid than the dress she wore, and half-packed trunks, were scattered about. She had not quite finished dressing for she had but one shoe on - the other was on the table near her hand. . .'

    2. Oh! Dear! I made an error! And, I have been duly reprimanded!

I know she was "Miss"...and how silly of me to make the mistake...and how could I not expect you to correct me - to point out the error of my ways!! Very remiss of me, I do declare!

I shall rap myself over the knuckles for being so ignorant!

I have read the book, Yorkie...and viewed filmed depictions of the story a couple of times over the years. We are not that far behind the times here Down Under!!

  10. Weather can be variable here as well. Remember the snow we had last week?

    1. Given your geographical position I would suggest that your weather is not subject to as much variability as ours Red.

  11. I didn't know 'tout suite' was an actual phrase! I immediately heard Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke) and Truly Scrumptious (Sally Anne Howes) singing 'Toot Sweet' from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the movie, lol!

    1. Thanks for dropping by again Hilly. I must come over to your blog tout suite in order to see how things are developing on the home front for you.

  12. Please excuse the correction, but the phrase is actually "tout de suite" ... although maybe you knew that already. Grade nine French class kicking in, sorry :)

I love the Ikea meme. And our weather is affected by the same factors as yours, but I'm so used to it I just assume that's what everybody's weather is like.
