You are lying on a beach. There is no one else around. The sand is fine and comfortable shaping itself under your back. Your hands are at your sides. You can feel the sand with your fingertips. You are conscious of your breathing. You inhale and exhale steadily with your rib cage rising and falling almost imperceptibly. Strangely, the rhythm is identical to the wavelets that advance and then recede at the water's edge just a few feet away. In and out and then more slowly - in...and...out. You can hear the sound of the wavelets - gently lapping. In...and...out.Your eyes are closed but through your eyelids you can see the light of the sun above. And it is warm upon your skin. You feel its afternoon rays. Your muscles are relaxed. You consider them one by one. Muscles in your legs. In your toes. In your arms. In your chest and belly. They have no tension. Even the muscles of your face and neck. All so very relaxed. And as the sea cleanses the shore so your breathing cleanses your mind. There is nothing there. No memories. No worries. No plans. No words. The tide takes all thoughts away. There is just your breathing. The warm sun upon your skin and the lapping sea upon the shore. That's all.

You are reminding me that I truly do need to go to the beach. Not just for an afternoon or a day but for a few days, at least, to honestly remember how this feels.
ReplyDeleteSome thoughts have been gnawing away at me. I remembered lying on faraway beaches.
DeleteAre you sure you weren't a yoga instructor in another life, YP? I relaxed so much reading this I nearly slid out of my chair :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you read it slowly Jenny. I thought of writing the instruction "Read slowly" at the top.
DeleteWhat brought this on, I wonder?
ReplyDeleteBeing able to relax so completely is definitely a good thing!
When I taught drama in schools, I would often instruct the children to lie down at the very start of the session and relax them with that kind of exercise. And then they'd be ready to participate more fully in the main tasks.
DeleteAnd then the tide comes in.
ReplyDeleteAnd you float away to the "Bounty" island...
DeleteThe funny thing about British beaches is that they are fairly cold and induce goose bumps, but the yoga aspect of what you have written is appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the exercise would work if you pictured Filey beach or even Spurn Point.
DeleteAre you about to release your first relaxation therapy podcast?
ReplyDelete"Peace With Pudding" will be more popular than "That Peter Crouch Podcast" but probably not as popular as "Darning With Dunham"
Deletezzzzzzzzz..... 😴
