Sticky Toffee Pudding just sent me these questions:-

  • Why - when you empty a murky washing up bowl - is there always one piece of cutlery left in the bottom?
  • Why do some wild birds choose to live in the countryside - while others - of the same species - choose to live in urban areas?
  • Why have I got several single socks in my sock drawer and where did their partners go?
  • Why can I remember clearly things that happened forty years ago but virtually nothing about last week?
  • Why do automatic washing machines take such a ridiculously long time to complete their cycles?
  • Why do I always pick the slowest queue in the supermarket?
  • Why do the wood pigeons I feed every day fly off the moment I open our back door even though park pigeons will eat from my hand?
  • Why did some idiot introduce North American grey squirrels to these shores?
  • Why are there some nights when there's nothing on television that appeals to you while on other nights there are three or four good programmes being shown at the same time?

These are just some of the mysteries of the universe. Perhaps you can answer one or two of STP's questions or maybe you've got nagging issues of your own you'd like to add to the list? Why?... Why not?

  1. 1) You should always immerse your hand in the murky water BEFORE tipping it out and pray that the offending item you are about to retrieve is not the carving knife!
    2) Same reason humans live in countryside and some live in cities... personal preference!
    3) Your dark matter doppelgänger is asking the self same question!
    4) Different parts of the brain - pre-frontal lobe and/or hippocampus and cortex or something.
    5) Because they're automatic! Same as dishwashers!
    6) Easily remedied.... make your choice then simply move one queue left or right to the side of you.
    7) You've answered your own question really.... wild and domesticated really.... the park birds are more familiar with the fact that humans=food where the wild ones think humans=pie!
    8) Because they were Victorian and shooting lions and moving animals and plants around the world was fashionable!
    9) Because you don't have SKY+, Tivo or a freeview HDR!

  2. I suppose the obvious unanswerable question is: Why David Cameron?

But a few others for you:
    1) How many roads must a man walk down?
    2) What is the speed of dark?
    3) Why don't psychics ever win the lottery?
    4) Why do the F and J keys on your keyboard have a raised bit underneath, even on an iPad?

  3. I can answer SP's question #4...so you'll know your fingers are in the correct position on the keyboard. That's for those of us who type with more than 2 fingers.

You have single socks because your automatic washer feeds on them. If it's digesting when you put another load in it, the new load will take much longer.

Past events are in your brain's memory, which is probably full by now. Recent events are being stored in your brain's ram. You need more memory for long term storage, because the stuff in your ram is being written over every week.

Happy to be of service. I have no questions to add, I'm happy that life is a mystery.

  4. ARCTIC FOX Thank you for your wise and well-considered responses.
    1) The answer is blowing in the wind
    2) Nobody knows because it's too dark to see the speedometer.
    3) Like Morecambe with Wise, every great comedian needs his psychic.
4)The bumps or nipples found on the F and J keys on the keyboard helps users correctly position their left and right hand on the keyboard without having to look at it. For example, without looking at the keyboard you can easily position your left index finger on the F and the right index finger on the J, which then positions all the remainder of your fingers in the correct position. I thought everyone knew this.
JAN BLAWAT So if we didn't put socks in our automatic washers what would these greedy beasts eat? And do you mean "ram" as in sheep? Is there a little horny creature inside my head?

  5. JAN B. Please don't answer the last question!

  6. What a great post, and an even better series of comments/ answers!

No witty nor insightful additions from me. I can't brain today. I have the dumb.

  7. Thank you Jan and YP, but to go back to the second part of my question, so why do they appear on an iPad on screen keyboard?

  8. SHOOTING PEEWITS Probably it's nostalgia - harking back to older technology.
