Help!

You may recall that I recently won the "picture of the week" competition over at the geograph photo-mapping site. As is customary, my reward is to pick the next winning photograph. I have narrowed my choice down to the following four images taken in different locations on this island between November 30th and December 6th.

Please tell me which picture you like best or put them in your rank order.

(Picture A)

(Picture B)

(Picture C)

(Picture D)

  1. I think I like them in the same order you have posted them.

  2. They are all quite beautiful but picture A is the finest.

  3. In the same order.
    Composition- I have no idea
    Visual effect - I 'like/prefer' A

There is a lot to see (and more) in A......after a while your eyes get a glazed look viewing the others. Looking again at A you see things you didn't see first time round.

  4. I like them all...but having to choose, I choose A followed very closely by D.

  5. A, B, C, D for me - and some others too by the look of it!

  6. I love picture A! I would say: A, C, D, B. They are all very nice photos.

  7. D first - based on composition; then C, B, A. I like A, but I would not have the horizon line in the middle of the picture.

  8. A, C,B, D. they are all first class photos.

  9. A, D, B, C. Just personal preference, though. I don't know much about composition or other elements of good photography, I just know what I like.

  10. Think I will go with the majority, A,B,C,D. In all honesty I don't like people in the frame, the landscape is the star.

  11. A,C,B,D. I like them all but in this order.

  12. A,D,B....no, A,B,C....maybe not A,D,C.B. I don't know. Whatever. It's too early in the morning to make decisions.

  13. A definitely first. C B or B C and D last.

  14. B, A, D, C is my ranking.

  15. I love A. It depicts peace and calm with two lovers out for a stroll. B would be more effective without the man. C and D are too stark (and dark) to be out of the usual. Definitely A.

  16. Thank you for your help everybody! Because of your input I have been swayed to Picture A. Previously, I had fully intended to make Picture C the winner but now it will be Picture A.

  17. I'd go for A or C. I like B, but I can't tell what that flying thing is. And D is nice but a little too ordinary. That's my two cents.

Oh, I see above that you chose A. Well done!

  20. Even tho I love colorful skies, I would choose the first one. There is a lot going on there. What they tell artists of any kind is that you must make sure that the observer looks at a piece of art (which a photograph like yours are) and when their eye lands in a certain area it does not stop there but because of the activity that they see there, they want their eye to wander to every corner and back again. That is a good photo or piece of art. Number one definitely does that. The busyness of the tree branches in front of the solid colored sky and the height of the trees including the shadows in the water juxtapositioned against the smallness of the human figures is perfect as your eye wanders. That photo is a beautiful work of art! In my humble opinion, of course.

    1. My opinions are also very humble Mama Thyme. Thank you for confirming what most other commenters thought.

  22. D,A,C,B they are all wonderful pictures!!

  23. Definitely No. 1, in its meandering way. The other three do have their merits - in a sort of stark, almost staged, stylized form. Contrived one might say. Having said that, the trees in No 4 are wonderful yet, don't laugh - or do if you must, I can't help feeling that a lot of landscape photography is marred by sun sets.

Other than that, congratulations on your own winning entry. I do enjoy your photography. Every one of your pictures does tell a story/underlines the story you tell.

    1. This was arguably the most thoughtful analysis I received Ursula for which I send my thanks. I agree with what you say about sunsets - they can be a bit of a tired cliché - though I thought that this one was very striking - even though the gentleman appeared to be posing like a male model in an outdoor wear catalogue.
