Dandruff

Forget global warming and the continuing threat of nuclear warfare because something far more sinister is sweeping across the western world. It is an epidemic, a veritable plague and no household in the land is immune from its deadly clutches.

What am I talking about? Dandruff of course. The title of this blogpost was a giveaway wasn't it?

But what is my evidence for this assertion? Well, I have visited several supermarkets in the past month, always making a beeline for the shampoo sections or aisles. And in every supermarket I was greeted by an array of anti-dandruff products.

As is well-known by shampoo scientists in white coats, ordinary shampoo is useless when it comes to tackling the dandruff curse. Dandruff can only be defeated by regular use of anti-dandruff shampoo - "Head and Shoulders" being the number one weapon in mankind's war upon the evil scalp condition.

How on earth did our ancestors endure their lives without the aid of anti-dandruff shampoos? They are a godsend, as miraculous as penicillin or the contraceptive pill.

Have you got friends or family members who are quietly enduring the dandruff disease? They may be too ashamed or embarrassed to seek support. It is easy to spot sufferers because where ever they go it seems to be snowing and their clothes may appear to have been dusted with something resembling dessicated coconut.

Mankind strives to tackle cancer, weapons of mass destruction and the AIDS epidemic but where are the warriors who will take up the fight against dandruff? How much longer must we suffer?

  1. Judging by the price of dandruff shampoo, it is only slightly more desirable than baldness

    1. But it is created by scientists in white coats. It must be worth buying - mustn't it?

    1. Nor me. Marketers have created a quiet and unnecessary panic.

  4. Treat the cause and not the symptoms. I don't remember ever having dandruff. I have experienced baldness though.

    1. Baldness is a disturbing condition to deal with - especially for women.

    2. It was temporary hair loss caused by cancer treatment.

  5. Can't recall ever having had dandruff. But there is a vintage bottle of Head and Shoulders lurking at the back of the bathroom cupboard. I keep it just in case... It's a left over from when my husband suffered a single "attack" years and years ago. I wonder if some people are more prone to it than others?

    1. I suspect it is all in the mind CG and largely put there by shampoo companies. I have also never been afflicted by dandruff.

    3. Surely, thorough washing with ordinary shampoo should work? Is it contagious and can one pick it up through blogging?

  6. I'm always curious about a current anti-dandruff advertisement which states . . 'flakes visible from 2 feet away'. Surely that means it isn't working????

    1. You are referring to "Head and Shoulders" which has done its damnedest to encourage self-consciousness about scalps.

  7. To say nothing of the heartbreak of psoriasis. (Full disclosure: I have neither dandruff nor psoriasis.)

Dandruff can’t hold a candle to the southeastern creeping crud, not that I would know anything about that either.

    1. I wouldn't wish to bracket dandruff with psoriasis. Psoriasis is an awful condition and I have every sympathy with those who suffer from it. I can easily laugh at dandruff but I would never laugh at psoriasis.

  8. LOL -- I love this. People are obsessed by the silliest things. (Although I confess I don't have dandruff either, maybe because I don't have hair. Can a bald person have dandruff?)

    1. Bald people are bald because of dandruff. If they had used anti-dandruff shampoo in their youth they would all have leonine manes of hair.

  9. Image result for dandruff
Dandruff can have several causes, including dry skin, seborrhoeic dermatitis, not cleaning/scrubbing often enough, shampooing too often, scalp psoriasis, eczema, sensitivity to hair care products, or a yeast-like fungus. Dry skin is the most common cause of flaking dandruff.

If you do have dandruff it can be a very unpleasant condition for a number of reasons both medical (presumably it can itch a lot) and socially (it doesn't look nice and people comment on it).

Fortunately I don't suffer from dandruff either but then I've always used either Vosene or a supermarket version of Head and Shoulders. However neither of them has prevented my baldness which, I have to say, I have never found disturbing. There are much more important things to be concerned about.

  10. If you had dandruff yourself, I imagine you would see it much differently. As Graham points out, there are a number of conditions behind the flaking and there are different treatments depending on the condition. It's really not a pleasant condition to have.

    1. No doubt a very small percentage of people suffer from dandruff brought about by worrying scalp conditions that should be addressed to medical pratitioners. However, shampoo manufacturers have deliberately stirred up an atmosphere in which shoppers in general have come to view dandruff as a scourge upon humanity that must be fended off at all costs. As with our ancestors who had no access to anti-dandruff shampoos, dandruff is generally not a big deal. You imply that I had not thought through dandruff matters before making this blogpost Jenny but I assure you I had given it a lot of thought.

  11. In order for you to spend an inordinate amount of time and thought on this subject today, my brother, you are either suffering from:
    1. Boredom of the most severe kind
    2. Lack of commitment to the beauty of this day
    OR
    3. you are loosing a piece of your mind (which surely is covered by a scalp on which dandruff may or may not be visible.)
