My late brother's daughter Katie still resides on the west coast of Ireland. Like her father, Katie loves to make music. As well as possessing a fine singing voice, she plays whistles, flutes and pipes with skill and feeling.
Recently, she made a studio recording of a song by Finbar Furey. He is well-known in traditional Irish music circles. The song is called "I Remember You Singing This Song" and when I first heard it I was blown away. Katie sings it so perfectly in my view. She is now entering middle-age and so brings her experience of life to this song. It's there in every phrase and every note. Please see what you think:-
The song is available on Apple i-tunes. Go here.
Ahh, beautifully done. There is significant influence from both Scotland and Ireland in the music here on the east coast of Canada so this tune is quite similar to what we hear and love in our traditional music. Your niece has a wonderful gift.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your honest response Jenny. I had heard before about the transference of British folk music to eastern Canada.
DeleteIt's very well done. I loved it
ReplyDeleteThanks for your response Terry.
DeleteKatie has a wonderful voice, and you are right, there is a lot of feeling in the way she sings this song. I didn't know the song, but it made very good company to my Saturday morning coffee. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteShe had permission from Finbar Furey to record it. He hads his own version in YouTube. If you are interested, it's here:-

Katie has a beautifully mellow voice just perfect for the song. Coincidentally I'd been thinking of my parents this morning so it was a very apt song too for my mood. I loved it.
ReplyDeleteIt is laced with memory and loss.
DeleteI don't usually comment here YP, although I read regularly, but felt I had to comment after hearing your niece...beautiful ! What a voice. And the song brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for sharing her talent.
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping your head above the parapet Lorraine and for sharing your response.
DeleteHow talented she is...and what a lovely song.
ReplyDeleteHear it a few times and it gets under your skin Libby.
DeleteKatie has a well rounded voice with good enunciations which makes her an ideal ballad singer. Look forward in hearing more from her.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing and bringing her to my attention.
Unfortunately there are no albums out there. I think this is the best recording she has ever done. But you can also find her here Mr Heron:-

That is brilliant YP, right up my street, loved it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your honest and enthusiastic response Derek.
DeleteLoved it - love Irish music YP.
ReplyDeleteChristy Moore is my favourite of all time. Do you know his music at all?
Not only do I know his music, I met him once walking along a lane in County Clare. I am happy you liked Katie's song Mrs Weaver.
Delete"One Starry Night" is also a great song, if she ever records a CD, let us all know.
ReplyDeleteThanks for listening to that one too Derek.
DeleteShe has an amazing voice and should be better known or is she already well known in Ireland? She should be encouraged to go for something like the x factor or BGT to get discovered on a bigger scale. You do have a talented family.
ReplyDeleteTrue of aficionados of Irish music in Ireland know about Katie but she has never made an album and her talent is not known amongst the general populace. Perhaps this song will spark something. I hope so.
DeleteWhat a unique voice, soothing and enjoyed the video and song. Best wishes to her!
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking the time to check it out Mr B.
DeleteVery nice. She has a beautiful singing voice.
ReplyDeleteShe's known some trouble. I think this impacts beneficially on her singing.
DeleteLovely, Yorkie. :)
ReplyDeleteWhy the comma Lee?
DeleteI have loved the Fureys for years and have several of their albums. Your neice has a beautiful clear voice.
