Miliband

This is Ed Miliband, the current leader of the Labour Party in Great Britain. Sadly, he's got an awkward look about him and comes across as a bit of a twerp from a metropolitan egghead family. I have voted Labour all my life but like other Labour supporters I know, we all agree that he's not the right man - or woman - to lead the people's party into the forthcoming general election. He's a liability with an exceptionally low popularity rating for the main opposition leader.

Of course cartoonists have been doing their best to make caricatures of him. Here's Dom Richards's best effort in "Private Eye":-
In idle moments, I have also been trying to capture Ed Miliband's image in a cartoon. I must have tried twenty different versions but this is the best I have come up with so far:-
I know, I'll just have to keep trying.

  1. I know the poor bloke can't help looking like an alien but he could help talking like one.
The cartoon is much better than I could draw. You deserve full marks for having the stomach to study him.

    1. I wanted his head to look like an egg and his hair to look like a chimney's sweep's brush. As my Art teacher, Mr Doyle, might have said - "Must try harder".

  2. There's not much I can say about him, since I have never heard im speak or read enough about him to "judge", but at least he has nice teeth. They look a lot better cared for than most of what I've seen up North. (I know, it's got a lot to do with money, but even poorer people COULD have better teeth if they took better care of themselves, couldn't they.)

    1. As an UpNorth guy, I just want to say that I have the teeth of a young chimpanzee.

  3. Librarian, here is an interesting note: the worst teeth I've ever seen in poor people in the U.S. are in the isolated areas of Appalachia. The best teeth are those of our Mexican immigrants. Poverty seems to be less of a factor than inbreeding. Don't know anything about your people "up North," just sayin'.

    1. I think that older people with unnaturally white gnashers look hideous. You often see this with old filmstars and politicians. Bags of money but little common sense.

    2. The worst sights teeth-wise I've ever had to endure (apart from my own teeth, which I heartily dislike) were in Sicily. For 10 years, I spent nearly every summer on the island, as part of my first husband's family. Some people there were VERY beautiful, with masses of lovely black wavy hair, but... as soon as they opened their mouths, all admiration was gone in an instant.
Agree with YP about the unnaturally white gnashers on some folks!

  4. I can't pass comment because I know nothing about the man, but it does look like he picked up the wrong set of teeth from the jars beside his bed!

Your caricature is very good, Yorky. :)

    1. Thanks Lee but I can do better. If you post two or three pictures of your good self on your blog I will make a caricature of you for free.

    2. Attached to my comment is a picture of me, Yorky. It probably does already look like a caricature of me...I know the reflection of that strange woman who keeps looking back at me from my mirror does! Enough is enough already!!! ;)

  5. I usually try not to comment about politics but I do like your sketch and actually think people would recognise who you are drawing.
On the subject of teeth I'm sorry to say that my observations of the English is that many have very bad teeth for such a prosperous country and many people do need orthodontic help especially. Does the National Health stretch to Orthodontists?

    1. Orthodontists tend to be private but there are NHS orthodontists who will tackle dental issues that are non-cosmetic. Surely you have seen some English people with good teeth? I remember my PE teacher when I was at school - now he had Hollywood teeth (i.e. false).

    2. Oh of course there are lots with good teeth and as most of the ones I mention need cosmetic orthodontic work I guess they just stand out. We have to pay for our own orthodontic work here too but most people think it is important and do try to stretch their finances to it .

  6. Unfortunately he may be a great leader with people who know him.... But leaders in this age must be able to " do" the media
    Ed can't
    Labour has to bin him

    1. They should have ditched him a year ago - giving anew leader like Yvette Cooper or Andy Burnham a chance to promote themselves and give the party fresh impetus.

  7. Horrible drawing and real picture, Mr. Pudding. Unfortunately, this guy would not make it in the U.S. these days....neither would Walter Cronkrite, Richard Nixon, ...... anybody that is not beautiful according to the standards of the day. What a damn joke, eh? Really?
