2005

The Golden Gate Bridge seen from Alcatraz Island
2005 was the year in which I truly discovered digital photography. In that year I was of course still the hardworking  Head of English in one of Sheffield's toughest secondary schools. In spite of that I still managed no less than five significant trips of different lengths that year.
In Moravia in The Czech Republic
In March we had a two week family holiday in California. In May, Shirley and I had four days in the Czech Republic with our friends - Steve and Moira. You can see them walking on the left with Shirley in the image above.

In August, Shirley and I flew down to the south of France to spend a few days with my brother Robin and his girlfriend Suzy - twenty miles south of Toulouse. At the start of September I went to western Ireland with our Ian to spend three nights at my brother Paul's place. And then in October, Shirley and I visited Rome for three nights.
In the foothills of the Pyrenees
To tell you the truth, I had forgotten that all these trips abroad happened in the same year. To accompany this post I have chosen just one picture from each of the trips - selected from my digital archive.

    2. Time certainly is speeding up...the years are flying by all too quickly. Things I thought happened perhaps only two years ago, for example, I discover occurred five or more years ago!!!

It's time to apply the brakes, I think!

    1. I plan to create a photobook using last year's pictures. Ever the imaginative one, I shall title it "2019"!

    1. I doubt that I have ever had another year like it.

  4. Clear to see from these photos of 15 years ago that you have always had a keen eye and talent for framing a photo to capture a moment in time.

  5. Scary when you think how fast time flies by. I visited Alcatraz many, many years ago; I was twenty two years old.

  6. It seems like 2000 was just the other day and yet it was twenty years ago already. The photos are lovely and it would appear that you have had a fondness for bovines for a long time:)

I tried getting some shots of cows one day for a friend. My husband and I drove out into the country until we found a field of cows, got out of the car, stepped towards the field and boom, they all took off running. Happened a few times. Had no idea cows were so fast.

    1. I hope that you are not suggesting that my "fondness" for bovines is unnatural... veering into bestiality! Not Guilty Your Honour!

  7. The sun seems to have followed you wherever you roamed that year.
When we visited San Francisco the bridge stubbornly refused to emerge from its blanket of cloud the whole time we were there.

  8. And you obviously took to this sort of photography immediately!
Did you even bother to put your suitcases away at all that year?

    1. Shirley deals with the suitcases. As you know, nurses are practical people - good at organising stuff.

  12. Wow, you did a lot of travelling in that year! Did you sometimes wake up in the morning and not immediately know where you were?

  13. What a special year of wonderful trips! Your pictures are great. You were lucky to be able to visit Alcatraz while in San Francisco. When I lived there in the early 70's Alcatraz was occupied by Indians and was closed to the public.

  14. Wow, that IS a lot of travel for one year. And one of those was very long distance. You have an advantage in Europe in being not too far from new and different countries. Here we have a choice of Canada or the US within easy distance and that's it!

It's fun to look through older pictures and revive those memories.
