Evidence of a Friday evening stroll along Stanage Edge. How many times have I photographed those abandoned millstones? In different seasons and different times of day and different weather conditions. On Friday I noticed the golden quality of the evening light with the sun sinking at Chapel-en-le-Frith.
Just above the millstones - another familiar photo subject - the triangulation pillar at the southern end of Stanage Edge. In case you are interested, it is Trig Point 6150. The high number may give you an indication of just how many such pillars exist in The British Isles.
It wasn't the most dramatic of sunsets but as you can see others were up on the rocks to witness the nightly spectacle. You never know what you are going to get.
And then today, Saturday, I was back over in East Yorkshire. I spotted this lovely stained glass window in St Mary's Church, Elloughton. The church itself was built from local stone in the second half of the thirteenth century...
And here's the church itself in all its summer glory. Well cared for and well-maintained in an affluent village on the southern edge of The Yorkshire Wolds.
After all, I had photos of a white van to take and a football match to watch. Visitors will be pleased to note that Hull City beat Coventry City by three goals to two with a hat-trick from our new Colombian striker - Oscar Estupinan.
Maybe you should visit every triangulation pillar in the British Isles and treat us to the photos.
ReplyDeleteThat said, while I am not much of a fan of what goes on inside churches, I find most of them stunning to look at.
What goes on inside churches is a lot of cleaning, sweeping and polishing.
DeleteAnd there are indeed people whose hobby is to "bag" as many trig points as possible! I am not one of them even though I have taken photos of many of the pillars.
This visitor is quite uninterested in sporting scores and momentarily ponders the word striker, who is no doubt responsible for disciplining the team. However, the photos are very nice and especially the lighting in millstone and trig tower shots.
ReplyDeleteIf you want a Hull City team shirt you can order one online. You will look so cool and err, well, sporty!
DeleteIt looks like some interesting additions have been made to St Mary's church.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The right section looks Victorian to me.
DeleteLovely photos especially the one where the stained glass is reflected on the stone in the church. I am fascinated by rocks, those that 'rock' gently balanced on other rocks, undermined by millions of years weathering.
ReplyDeleteI came across a huge rock on Stanage Edge on Friday night. You could rock it an inch or two. It must have weighed more than an imperial ton.
DeleteBeautiful photos. I want to walk there and touch those rocks, see those churches, feel the atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteCome on over then River. The airfare is incredibly cheap.
DeleteI don't even have a passport, let alone airfare.
DeleteThat first photo has beautiful light, and of course I love the sunset one. The churches all look different but each of them interesting, too.
ReplyDeleteWell done, your team!
You can order a Hull City team shirt directly from the club. There won't be many women in Ludwigsburg strolling around in Hull City shirts.
DeleteI went to school with quite a few from Elloughton, and sometimes visited them. One took me on a bike ride down Brantingham Dale which is long and steep - he gave me an old bike with worn-out brakes.
ReplyDeleteI guess he didn't really like you then! Elloughton is quite a long way from Goole isn't it?
DeleteThey travelled each day by train from Brough.
DeleteExcellent photos YP. The stones look prehistoric - how often do we stop to think that the ground we walk on is timeless.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if that's an original stained glass window?
I am sure that window is only about a hundred years old Carol.
DeleteFor this Florida girl, seeing these incredibly old and still sturdy buildings is always a reminder of just how raw and relatively new this country is.
ReplyDeleteAmerica's original "huddled masses" hailed from Europe - many of the first settlers from The British Isles. Some of that homeland history remains deeply buried in your DNA so it is partly yours too Mary.
DeleteThat stained glass photo is incredible.
ReplyDeleteI like the kaleidoscope colours on the inner window surround.
DeleteBeautiful pictures! I love the stained-glass window and silhouetted people watching the sunset. What kind of camera do you have? I'm sure you've told us but I can't remember.
ReplyDeleteLovely collection of photos. The light in the first four is spectacular each in its own way.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos. I like the light this time of year, you're right, more golden.
ReplyDeleteThese photos are spectacular, especially the sunset one.

ReplyDeleteThanks for six fine photos plus explanations. A pleasure for my eyes.
Well, and as for Estupiñán: If he keeps it up, Oscar will have 50 + x goals on his account after 46 matchdays. That should then be enough for promotion. ...
