All I have to offer today is a bunch of recent images that didn't make it into previous blogposts. The first four were taken on last Thursday's walk in mid-Derbyshire. The first one is of The Sherwood Foresters' Regimental Memorial near Crich:-
This picture was taken on the footpath that leads from Park Head to Fritchley:-This is St Mary's Church in Crich. It is Grade I listed and the initial structure went up in 1135AD - about seventy years into The Norman Conquest of Britain:-
And below a disused telephone box by Moorwood Moor. The telephone within has already been removed and vegetation is creeping inside:-
And now back to the island of Santorini in Greece. This was a cross above Perissa - the day I scrambled up to the little white church on the mountainside:-
The viewing scope above the caldera at Thira looked like a robot or space being to me:-And this little kiosk at Ancient Thira is meant to accommodate a member of the small security team that keeps an eye on the archaeological site during opening hours:-
And finally this is my old friend Tony on Saturday with the twin towers of Beverley Minster emerging from his skull:-
I'd hate to be the security guard having to be cooped up in that "kiosk" at Ancient Thira. I'm sure it would cause the guard to subconsciously constantly have the urge to go to the toilet!!
ReplyDeleteTony is obviously your Favourite Martian! :)
It must get very hot in those little kiosks. There were four of them at the site.
DeleteVery, very nice photos. Crisp, sharp, clear, beautiful. And interesting!
ReplyDeleteThank you MM.
DeleteWell, all those images are well worthwhile to post.
ReplyDeleteCheers Red!
DeleteLovely shots -- what gorgeous blues and greens!
ReplyDeleteI was going to post another donkey picture but changed my mind when I thought of you.
DeleteThank you
DeleteA wonderful variety of pictures! Are you sure that phone box is not a Tardis containing some ancient vegetation from it's travels?
ReplyDeleteYou have a vivid imagination Bonnie!
DeleteI love the photo of the phone box best. Maybe it is a Tardis!
ReplyDeleteMany British phone boxes have disappeared because of mobile phones. Perhaps they have all returned to their home planet.
DeleteThe path is my favourite.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, the viewing scope looks like a robot.
I am glad you like the path photo Meike. That simple scene stopped me in my tracks. It looked so beautiful.
DeleteGreat shots, YP. The one of the gate reminded me of an outing with father-of-son and his father (my father-in-law), August 1991. We had just ambled across many a green pasture and a farm full of piglets tumbling about their mother sow when we hit a MASSIVE hurdle. My husband wasn't one for turning, particularly when, with map in hand, there was supposed to be bloody path! Full circle for him - every time. Whilst I wouldn't describe myself as "eager" to please I am no spoil sport and I know when best to humour the easily irritated. I climbed over that seven/eight foot monstrosity - with little help. What the hell - I was only eight months pregnant.

Oh dear...funny looking back but at the time it must have been an anxious moment. I must admit that if I see a path marked on a map I will pursue it even if there are unexpected barriers on the route. Public rights of way need to be protected. However, if my wife had been eight months pregnant I would like to think that I would have turned back.
DeleteGreat photo of the Sherwood Foresters' memorial. My father in law served in the regiment before he joined the Commandos in 1944. Thank you for posting.
ReplyDeleteIt is a well-kept monument and the 360 degree views from the top are quite splendid.
DeleteThat second photo could be my book's front illistration
ReplyDeleteWell I would be honoured to let you use it John.
